Zhao Yan Delayed Wearing the Hu People’s Clothes
【原文】
赵燕后胡服，王令让之曰事主之行，竭意尽力，微谏而不哗，应对而不怨，不逆上以自伐，不立私以为名。子道顺而不拂，臣行让而不争。 子用私道者，家必乱；臣用私义者，国必危.反亲以为行，慈父不子；逆 主以自成，惠主不臣也。寡人胡服，子独弗服，逆主罪莫大焉；以从政为 累，以逆主为高，行私莫大焉。故寡人恐亲犯刑戮之罪，以明有司之 法。”赵燕再拜稽首曰前吏命胡服，施及贱臣，臣以失令过期，更不用 侵，辱教，王之惠也。臣敬循衣服以待（今）[令]日。”
【今译】
赵燕迟迟没有穿胡人的衣服，赵王派人责备他道侍奉君主，要竭 尽忠心与全力，要暗中进谏而不大声宣杨，回答君主的问话不要抱怨，不违背君主的意志来自我夸耀，不自我标榜来追求虚名。做儿子的原 则是顺从父亲而不违背他的意愿，做臣子的品行是谦让而不争名夺利々 做儿子的按照自己的方式行事，家中就会出现混乱,故臣予的按照自己 的意志行事，国家必定会有危险。违背父母的意志而自行其是的人，慈 父不承认他是自己的儿子；违背君主的意愿而自以为是的人，宽厚的君 主不任用他做臣子。我倡导穿胡人的衣服，而唯独你不穿，再也没有比 违背君主的意志更严重的罪过了.你把遵从命令当作负担，把违背君 主的意愿当作有气节，徇私没有比这更严重的了,所以我担心你犯下 被杀头的重罪，来表明我们严格执行相关法律。”赵燕拜了两拜叩头说: “前些时候官吏命令穿胡人的衣服，命令已经传达给我了。我没有执行 命令，延误了期限，您却没有惩罚我，反而屈尊开导我，这是大王对我的 恩惠。我会恭敬地遵循服饰制度来执行大王的命令。”
Zhao Yan delayed wearing the Hu people’s clothes. The king of the state of Zhao sent a messenger to admonish him as follows： “A person working for his sovereign should serve him heart and vSouK He should remonstrate with the sovereign privately, never loudly and openly. He shouldn’t complain when answering the sovereigny s question. He shouldn’t act against the sovereign? s will to show off，or take action secretly to gain a high reputation for himself. A son should comply with the will of his father and never act against it, A court official should behave humbly and never vie with others for wealth or fame. If a son acts according to his own will，the family will be disorganized. If court officials act according to their own wills，the state will be in danger. If a son acts against the will of his parents, even a kind father won’t accpet him as son. If a person goes his own way, even a benevolent sovereign won’t employ him as court official. I ordered you to wear the clothes of the Hu people. You are the only one who refuses to wear these clothes. Nothing could be more sinful than not following the sovereign ’ s order. If you regard taking orders as a burden and consider acting against the sovereign’s will as correct，nothing could be more selfish. So，I am afraid that you may be sentenced to death according to our regulations. ” Zhao Yan bowed twice, knelt down and appologized, “A few days ago, I received the order to wear the clothes of the Hu People. I have delayed taking this order. You not only didn’t punish me for that, but condescended yourself to give me instructions. That is very kind of you to do so. I will carry out your orders and dress with respect according to the rules regarding clothes.”
