Fu Ding Wanted Zhao to Ally with Qi and Wei
【原文】
富丁欲以赵合齐、魏，楼缓欲以赵合秦、楚。富丁恐主父之听楼缓 而合秦、楚也。
【今译】
富丁想让赵国跟齐国和魏国联合，楼缓想让赵国跟秦国和楚国联 合。富丁害怕君主会听从楼缓的建议而同意跟秦国和楚国联合。
Fu Ding wanted the state of Zhao to ally with the state of Qi and the state of Wei. Lou Huan wanted the state of Zhao to build an alliance with the state of Qin and the state of Chu. Fu Ding was in fear that the sovereign might take Lou Huan’s advice and unite with Qin and Chu.
【原文】
司马浅为富丁谓主父曰不如以顺齐。今我不顺齐伐秦，秦、楚必 合而攻韩、魏。韩、魏告急于齐，齐不欲伐秦，必以赵为辞，则伐秦者赵 也，韩、魏必怨赵。齐之兵不西，韩必听秦违齐.违齐而亲，兵必归于赵 矣。今我顺而齐不西，韩、魏必绝齐，绝齐则皆事我。且我顺齐，齐无而 西。日着楼缓坐魏三月，不能散齐、魏之交。今我顺而齐、魏果西，是罢齐敝秦也，赵必为天下重国主父曰：“我于三国攻秦，是俱敝也。”臼: “不然。我约三国而告之（秦）以未构中山也。三国欲伐秦之果也，必听 我，欲和我。中山听之，是我以（王因）[三国]饶中山而取地也。中山不 听，三国必绝之，是中山孤也。三国不能和我，虽少出兵可也。我分兵 而孤（乐）中山，中山必亡。我已亡中山，而以余兵与三国攻秦，是我一 举而两取地于秦、中山也
【今译】
司马浅为富丁对赵国君主说不如跟齐国联合。如果我们不跟齐 国一起进攻秦国，秦国和楚国必定会联合起来进攻韩国和魏国。韩国 和魏国向齐国求救，齐国不愿进攻秦国，必定会拿赵国做借口，那么不 进攻秦国的就是赵国了，韩国和魏国一定会怨恨赵国。齐国军队不向 西进攻秦国，韩国必定会听从秦国而违逆齐国，违逆齐国而亲近秦国， 必定会派兵进攻赵国了。如今我们跟齐国联合了，而齐国军队不向西 进攻秦国，韩国和魏国一定会跟齐囯断绝关系，跟齐国断绝关系了，就 会都来跟我们联盟.况且我们跟齐国联合，齐国军队不会不向西攻伐。 前段时间，楼缓在魏国呆了三个月，不能拆散齐国跟魏国的交情。如今我们跟齐国联合，而齐国和魏国军队果然向西进攻秦国，这样一来，就 会把齐国和秦国都弄得疲惫不堪，赵国必定会成为天下非常重要的国 家了。”赵国君主说我们加入齐国、韩国和魏国进攻秦国，就会把大家 弄得都很疲惫司马浅说广不是这样的。我们跟这三个国家联合，并 且告诉它们我们还没有跟中山国讲和。如果这三个国家坚决要进攻秦 国，必定会听我们的T就会让我们跟中山讲和。中上听从了，我们就可 以凭借这三个国家的支持让中山屈服，从而割取它的土地；中山国不听 从，这三个国家必定会跟它绝交，这样中山就被孤立起来了。如果这三 个国家不能支持我们跟中山讲和，即便我们少派一些士卒进攻秦国，也 是可以的^我们派一部分兵力摧毁被孤立的中山，中山必定会被消灭。 我们消灭了中山以后，用其余的兵力加入三国进攻秦国，这样一来，我 们一举就可以从秦国和中山两个国家割取土地。”
On behalf of Fu Ding，Sima Qian had a talk with the sovereign of the state of Zhao and said，“We’d better ally with the state of Qi. If we don’t join the state of Qi in attacking the state of Qin，Qin and Chu will unite with each other to attack the state of Han and the state of Wei. Han and Wei will ask the state of Qi for reinforcements. If Qi don’t assist them，it will use our state as a subterfuge (because we refuse to ally with it). Thus it will be the state of Zhao that refuses to attack the state of Qin. As a result， Han and Wei will be very bitter towards Zhao. If the troops of Qi don’t march westwards to attack Qin, Han will unite with Qin and act against Qi. In this case, Han and Qin will be close to each other，therefore they will definitely launch concerted attacks on Zhao. If you build an alliance with the state of Qi and Qi still doesn，t send troops westwards to attack Qin, Han and Wei will cut off their ties with Qi. If this is the case> they will both consort with us. In addition, if we unite with Qi, Qi f s troops will definitely march westwards to attack Qin. Once Lou Huan stayed in the state of Wei for about three months. But he still couldn’t alienate Wei from Qi. Now if we unite with Qi, the troops of Qi and Wei will certainly march westwards to attack Qin. As a result? both Qin and Qi will become exhausted. So Zhao will become an extremely powerful state in the world."The sovereign said，“If I join the three states—Qi, Han and Wei in attacking Qin, all of us will become exhausted.”Sima Qian said，“No, that’s wrong* We can ally with these three states and tell them that we still haven’t started peace talks with the state of Zhongshan. If they have made up their minds to attack Qin, certain that they will listen to us and agree to let us negotiate a ceasefire with the state of Zhongshan. If Zhongshan listens to us，we can conquer it and gain some land from it with the might of these three states. If Zhongshan doesn’t listen to us, these three states will definitely cut off their ties with it. As a result, Zhongshan will become isolated. If these three states don71 support us negotiating a ceasefire with Zhongshan, we can take this as an excuse and send only a small army to join them in attacking Qin. Thus we can send the rest of our troops to defeat the isolated Zhongshan. Zhongshan will surely be beaten. After we defeat Zhongshan, we can send the rest of our troops to join the allied forces of those three states in attacking Qin. Thus we can gain land both from Qin and from Zhongshan. ”
