Lord Pingyuan Had a Talk with Feng Ji
【原文】
平原君(请)[谓]冯忌曰广吾欲北伐上党，出兵攻燕，何如？”冯忌对 曰不可。夫以秦将武安君公孙起乘七胜之威，而与马服（之）子战干 长平之下，大败赵师，因以其余兵围邯（战）[郸]之城.赵以（亡）[七]败之余众，收破军之敝（守），而秦罢于邯郸之下。赵守而不可拔者.以攻 难而守者易也。今赵非有七克之威也，而燕非有长平之祸也。今七败 之祸未复，而欲以罢赵攻强燕，是使弱赵为强秦之所以攻，而使强燕为 弱赵之所以守。而强秦以休兵承赵之敝，此乃强吴之所以亡而弱越之 所以霸，故臣未见燕之可攻也。”平原君曰善哉！”
【今译】
平原君对冯忌说我想向北进攻上党，派兵攻打燕国，怎么样？”冯 忌回答说不行。当年秦国大将武安君白起凭借着七战七胜的威势， 跟马服君的儿子赵括在长平城外展开大战，惨重击溃了赵国的军队，接着用他剩余的军队包围了邯郸城。赵国凭着七战七敗的残余士卒，召集残兵敗将，苦苦守卫邯郸，而秦国军队在邯郸城外筋疲力尽，不能攻 克赵国守军、占领邯郸，是因为进攻艰难而守卫容易的缘故，如今赵国 军队没有七战七胜的威势，而燕国也没有经历过类似长平之战的灾祸。 现在赵国还没有从七战七敗的灾难中恢复过来，却想用赵国疲惫的军 队进攻强大的燕国，这是让疲弱的赵军充当强大的秦国的进攻军队，而 让强大的燕国充当疲弱的赵军的守卫角色。强大的秦国用休整好的军 队来进攻赵国疲惫不堪的军队，这就是当时强大的吴国之所以灭亡，而 弱小的越国之所以称霸的原因。所以我认为不可以进攻燕国平原君 说说得好！”
Lord Pingyuan had a talk with Feng Ji and said, “I am going to send troops to launch military action against Shangdang and attack the state of Yan. What do you think of it?" Feng Ji replied, “You shouldn’t do that. Previously, based on seven victories gained in seven battles, Bai Qi, the Commander-in-Chief of the state of Qin, also known as Lord Wuan, led the troops of Qin to attack the son of Lord Mafu outside the city of Handan and defeated the troops of Zhao badly. Then he dispatched the remaining officers and men to besiege the city of Handan. The state of Zhao relied on the troops that had already suffered seven severe losses to defend the city of Handan. The troops of Qin were exhausted，so they could not occupy Handan. It is much easier to defend an area compared with launching military action to attack an area. Now the troops of Zhao have not enjoyed seven victories like the aforementioned troops of Qin，and the state of Yan has not experienced such a disaster as the one we experienced in Changping. Our officers and men haven’t recovered from those seven losses. As weak as we are，you want to attack the strong and powerful Yan. Thus we will force our officers and men to play the same role as the formidable assault troops of the state of Qin，and coerce the strong and powerful Yan into playing the same role as our weak state has done during the previous war. If the formidable and well rested troops of Qin take advantage of the exhausted troops of the state of Zhao, Zhao will be defeated. For the same reason, the state of Wu was overthrown, but the sovereign of the state of Yue became one of the Lord-protectors. So, I don’t think that we should attack the state of Yan. ” Lord Pingyuan said, “Well， I see. ”
