秦攻赵，平原君使人请救于魏。信陵君发兵至邯郸城下，秦兵罢。 虞卿为平原君请益地，谓赵王曰夫不斗一卒，不顿一戟，而解（二）国 患者，平原君之力也。用人之力而忘人之功，不可。”赵王曰善。”将益 之地。公孙龙闻之，见平原君曰君无覆军杀将之功，而封以东武城。 赵国豪杰之士，多在君之右，而君为相国者，以亲故。夫君封以东武城，不让无功；佩赵国相印，不辞无能。一解国患，欲求益地，是亲戚受封而 国人计功也，为君计者，不如勿受便。”平原君曰谨受令。”乃不受封。
【今译】
秦国军队进攻赵国，平原君派人到魏国请求增援。信陵君派兵行 进到邯郸城下，秦军停止进攻。虞卿为平原君请求增益封地，对赵王 说不用一个士卒作战，没有磨损一件兵器，就解除了国家的危难，是 平原君出的力啊。用别人的力却忘记了人家的功劳，不行。”赵王说: “好的广将要增益平原君的封地。公孙龙听说了这件事，去见平原君， 对他说广您没有消灭敌军、斩杀敌人将领的功劳，却被封賜东武城。赵 国的豪杰人物，功劳大都比您多，而您做相国，是因为您是大王的至亲封给您东武城，您不声称自己没有功劳而推辞掉；佩带赵国的相印，也 不声称自己没有才千而推辞掉。一旦为国家解除危难，就想增益自己 的封地，这样一来，王室的近亲就都会接受封地，并且国汽的人都会评 估自己的功绩而索要酬劳了。为您着想，不如不接受封地为好平原 君说我会谨慎地按照您的吩咐行事。“于是没有接受封地。

For this reason, YuQing asked the state of ZhaotoenlargeLord Pingyuan、fief, and he told the king of Zhao，“ Lord Pingyuan‘ s contribution is removing a severe threat to our state without we losing one single soldier or using one piece of weaponry. We should not ignore this contribution,” The king said，“Youare right.” So he was abouttoenlargeLord Pingyuan’sfief. When Gongsun Long heardofthis, hewent to see Lord Pingyuan and said, “You have been conferred the region of eastern Wucheng without having annihilated any enemy troops or beheading any enemy generals. Most of the outstanding scholars in the state of Zhao are more meritorious than you. You have been appointed to be prime minister of Zhao just because you are the closest relative of His Majesty. Now you have been conferred the region of eastern Wucheng, However，you won’t reject it by declaring that you have made no contributions to the state. You hold the prime minister’s seal. However，you won’t give it up (referring to resignation) by declaring that you are incapable. Just because you have rescued the state from a severe threat, you want to enlarge your fief. As a result, His Majesty's relatives will all accept fiefs and people in the state will ask to be appointed to positions according to their contribtuions. For your sake, it would be better if you reject the fief. ” Lord Pingyuan said, “I will carefully follow your instructions.” So he didn’t accept the land conferred on him.
