A Man Told Lord Jianxin How to Serve the King
【原文】
或谓建信君之所以事王者，色也；葺之所以事王者，知也.色老而衰，知老而多。以日多之知，而逐衰恶之色，君必困矣。”建信君曰: “奈何？”曰并骥而走者，五里而罢；乘骥而御之，不倦而取道多。君令 葺乘独断之车，御独断之势，以居邯郸。令之内治国事，外剌诸侯，则葺 之事有不言者矣。君因言王而重责之，葺之轴今折矣。”建信君再拜受 命，人言于王，厚任葺以事能重责之。未期年而葺亡走矣。
【今译】
有人对建信君说广您用来侍奉大王的，是您美丽的相貌；茸用来侍奉大王的，是他的智慧。容貌会随着年龄的增长而衰退，智慧会随着年 龄的增长而增加。用一天天增进的智慧跟您逐漸衰退的容貌相角逐， 您一定会陷入困境的。”建信君说=“那该怎么办呢？”那人说跟骥一同 奔跑，跑五里路就疲惫不堪了 ；骑在它身上驾驭它，就不会疲倦而且能 走更远的路。您让葺乘着独断的车子，掌握着独断的大权，呆在邯郸， 让他在内处理国家大事，在外刺探诸侯的情况，那他做的事情肯定会有 失敗的。您趁机秉报大王并且严格要求他，他就完蛋了。”建信君拜了 两拜接受教导，进宫告诉大王任用葺担当非常重要的任务并且严格要 求他。没满一年，葺就逃亡了。
A man had a talk with Lord Jianxin and said, “You serve His Majesty with your handsome features. Qi serve His Majesty with his wisdom. You will no longer look handsome when you become old. But wisdom will accumulate along with age‘ If you rely on your ever-declining appearance to compete with ever-growing wisdom, you will definitely find yourself in trouble, ” Lord Jianxin asked，“What shall I do then?” The man said, “If you race with a swift horse，you will become tired after running five li. However，if you ride on the back of the horse and guide it to gallop forward, not only will you not become tired，but you can also cover a long distance. If you let Qi stay in Handan to take charge exclusively of government affairs within the state and spy on other states, certainly he will make some mistakes. Therefore，you can report it to His Majesty and expressly demand that Qi perform his duties assiduously. Thus Qi will be in trouble, ” Lord Jianxin bowed twice to the man and agreed to follow his intructions. Then Lord Jianxin went to the palace to suggest that the king allocate to Qi extremely important duties and expressly demand him to perform them assiduously. As a result, Qi fled within a year.
