为齐献书赵王
Someone Sent a Letter to Zhao's King for Qi
【原文】
为齐献书赵王，（使臣与复丑）曰臣一见，而能令王坐而天下致名 宝，而臣窃怪王之不试见臣而穷臣也。群臣必多以臣为不能者，故王重 见也。以臣为不能者非他，欲用王之兵成其私者也。非然，则交有所 偏者也；非然，则知不足者也；非然，则欲以天下之重恐王，而取行于王 者也，臣以齐循事王，王能亡燕，能亡韩、魏，能攻秦，能孤秦< 臣以为 齐致尊名于王，天下孰敢不致尊名于王？臣以齐致地于王，天下孰敢不 致地于王？臣以齐为王求名于燕及韩、魏，孰敢辞之？臣之能也，其前可见已。齐先重王，故天下尽重王；无齐，天下必尽轻王也。秦之强，以 无齐之故重王，燕、魏自以无齐故重王。今王无齐，独安得无重天下? 故劝王无齐者，非知不足也，则不忠者也.非然，则欲用王之兵成其私 者也；非然，则欲轻王以天下之重取行于王者也；非然，则位尊而能卑者 也。愿王之熟虑无齐之利害也 , "
【今译】
有人替齐国献给赵王一封书信，说我谒见大王一面，就能让大王 坐享天下各国送来的名贵宝物，但我私下纳闷，大王为何不召见我试试 而是让我陷入困厄。一定是大多数大臣以为我无能，所以大王不愿见 我。以为我无能的人没有别的原因，他们想利用大王的兵力来成就自 己的私欲。如果不是这种情况，就是结交了别的国家，想替它们谋利； 如果不是这种情况，就是他们不够明智；如果不是这种情况，就是想通 过天下各国的威势恐吓大王，从而让大王按照他们的意愿行事。我让 齐国恭顺地侍奉大王，大王能够消灭燕国，能够消灭韩国和魏国，能够 进攻秦国，能够孤立秦国.我认为，如果齐国把尊责的名号奉送给大 王，天下各国君主还有谁敢不把尊责的名号奉送给大王呢？我让齐国 奉献土地給大王，天下各国君主还有谁敢不奉献土地给大王呢？我凭 借着齐国为大王向燕国、韩国和魏国索取名贵的宝物，谁敢推辞呢？我的能力在于可以事先蓣见形势的发展。齐国率先尊崇大王，所以天下 各国都会尊崇大王P如果没有齐国的支持，天下各国必定都会轻视大 王，像桊那么强大的国家，因为没有齐国支持的缘故才重视大王，燕国 和魏国自然也是因为没有齐国支持的缘故才重视大王。如今大王不跟 齐国交好，怎能独自在天下受到重视？所以劝说大王跟齐国断绝关系 的，不是不够明智，就是不忠于大王。如果不是这种情况，就是想利用 大王的兵力为自己谋私利；如果不是这种情况，就是想通过天下各国的 威势让大王按照他们的意愿行事；如果不是这种情况，就是他们是地位 尊责但是能力低下的人.希望大王仔细考虑跟齐国绝交的利害。”
On behalf of the state of Qi，someone sent a letter to the king of the state of Zhao and said，“If Your Majesty agree to meet me face to face，you will be able to obtain the most precious treasures from all over the world without any efforts. I wonder why you don’t summon me to grant an interview to test my capability, I am sure that most of the high-ranking court offcials regard me as incapable. So it is very difficult for me to see Your Majesty face to face. Those regarding me as incapable want to utilize Your Majestyy s military forces to gain self-interest, or for the benefit of other states close to them. Perhaps they are not intelligent enough and want to threaten Your Majesty with the power of other states in the world，so that they can coerce you into acting according to their will. If I lead the state of Qi to serve Your Majesty humbly, you can ruin the states of Yan, Han and Wei, and invade the state of Qin as well as isolate the state of Qin. I think if Qi confers an honourable title on Your Majesty, no state in the world would dare refuse to confer this honourable title on Your Majesty. If I let Qi present some territory to Your Majesty，which state would dare refuse to cede territory to Your Majesty? With the power of Qi? if I demand famous treasures for Your Majesty from Yan, Han and Wei, how dare they refuse? My capability is to foresee the development of situations. If Qi attaches importance to Your Majesty? all other states in the world will also attach importance to Your Majesty. If you lose the support of Qi，they will all look down upon you. As powerful as the state of Qin is，it attaches importance to you because it hasn’ t established ties with Qi. Yan and Wei attach importance to you because they haven’t yet won over Qi. Now if Your Majesty cannot win over Qi, how can other states attach importance to you only? So，those persuading you to cut off ties with Qi are either not intelligent enough or not loyal to you. Or they just want to utilize Your Majesty’s military forces to benefit themselves- Perhaps, they also want to threaten you with the power of other states in the world to coerce you into acting according to their own will. Or they may be very incapable people holding extremely powerful positions, I hope that Your Majesty carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of winning over Qi,"
