Yu Qing Had a Talk with Zhao’s King
【原文】
虞卿（请)[谓]赵王曰广人之情，宁朝人乎？宁朝于人也？”赵王曰: “人亦宁朝人耳，何故宁朝于人？”虞卿曰：“夫魏为从主，而违者范座也。今王能以百里之地若万户之都请杀范座于魏，范座死，则从事可移于 赵赵王曰：“善。”乃使人以百里之地请杀范座于魏。魏王许诺，使司 徒执范座而未杀也。今王能以百里之地若万户之都请杀范座于魏，范座死，则从事可移于 赵赵王曰：“善。”乃使人以百里之地请杀范座于魏。魏王许诺，使司 徒执范座而未杀也。
【今译】
虞卿对赵王说：“按照人之常情，是宁愿让别人来朝拜自己，还是宁肯去朝拜别人呢？”赵王说：“人当然是愿意让别人来朝拜自己，为什么宁肯朝拜别人呢？”虞卿说魏国是主张合纵的盟主，而促成合纵的是 范座。现在大王如果能把方圆百里的土地或者拥有一万户人家的城邑 献给魏国，请求魏国杀死范座，范座死后，那操纵合纵的权力就可以转 移到赵国手里了。”赵王说好。”于是派人进献一百里土地给魏国请求 杀死范座。魏王答应了，让司徒把范座抓起来，但是还没有处死他。
Yu Qing had a talk with the king of the state of Zhao and said, “According to the innate nature of human beings，do you think they want others to pay homage to them? Or do you think they would rather pay homage to others?” The king said, “Of course they want others to pay homage to them. Why would they rather pay homage to others? Yu Qing said, “The state of Wei is the leader of those advocating Hezong，and Fan Zuo is the one proposing this strategy. Now if you present the king of the state of Wei with one hundred square li of land or a city with ten thousand families，and ask him to kill Fan Zuo, you will become the leader of Hezong after Fan Zuo dies. ” The king said，“Very good. ” Then he sent someone to present one hundred li of land to the king of Wei and asked him to have Fan Zuo killed. The king of Wei agreed. He ordered the Minister of Justice to arrest Fan Zuo and was about to kill him.

范座献书魏王曰臣闻赵王以百里之地请杀座之身。夫杀无罪范 座，座薄故也；而得百里之地，大利也。臣窃为大王美之。虽然，而有一 焉，百里之地不可得，而死者不可复生也，则（主）[王]必为天下笑矣！ 臣窃以为与其以死人市，不若以生人市使也。”
【今译】
范座给魏王写了 一封信，说我听说赵王用一百里土地请求把我 杀死。杀死无罪的范座是件小事，而得到一百里土地是个大的利益。 我私下为大王感到庆幸。虽然如此，可是还有一点：如果不能得到这一 百里土地，已经被杀死的人也不可能复活了，那大王必将被夭下人嘲笑 了。我私下认为，与其用死人跟他们交易，不如用活人跟他们交易
Fan Zuo wrote a letter to the king of Wei as follows： “I heard that the king of the state of Zhao has offered to trade one hundred li of land for my life. Killing an innocent person like me is only an insignificant thing. On the other hand，it is a big profit to gain one hundred li of land. I privately congratulate Your Majesty for that. However, you have forgotten one thing. I cannot come back to life again. If you don’t gain one hundred li of land after killing me, you will be derided by people all over the world, I personally think it would be better if you trade a living Fan Zuo instead of a dead one for the land. ”
【原文】
又遗其后相信陵君书曰广夫赵、魏，敌战之国也。赵王以咫尺之书 来，而魏王轻为之杀无罪之座。座虽不肖，故魏之免相（望）也，尝以魏之故得罪于赵。夫国内无用臣，外虽得地，势不能守。然今能守魏者， 莫如君矣。王听赵杀座之后，强秦袭赵之（欲）[故]，倍赵之割，则君将 何以止之？此君之累也。”信陵君曰善。”遽言之王而出之。
【今译】
范座又给后来的相国信陵君写了 一封信，说赵国和魏国是敌对 交战的国家。赵王派人送来区区一尺书信，而魏王就轻易为此杀死没有任何罪过的我。我虽然不肖，也还是被魏国罢免的相国，曾经为了魏国的缘故而得罪赵国。如果国内没有了能干事的大臣，即使从外面得 到了土地，也势必不能固守v然而现在能守卫魏国的，没有谁能比得上 您了。大王听信赵国处死我以后，强大的秦国将沿袭赵国的做法，许诺 给我们比赵国多一倍的土地，那您将如何制止这种事？这也是您的祸 患啊信陵君说；“好。”立即告诉魏王，释放了范座。
He then wrote a letter to Lord Xinling，the one who would take his place as the new prime minister, as follows： “The state of Zhao and the state of Wei are enemies. Now the king of Zhao has sent a one-cAz long letter here，and His Majesty will sentence me to death simply because of this letter‘ Although I am unworthy，I am still the former prime minister of the state of Wei. I offended the state of Zhao for the sake of our state. If there is no capable high-ranking court official in our state, we cannot maintain the land we have gained from other state. However, the only one that can defend the state of Wei is you. After His Majesty kills me as demanded by the state of Zhao, the powerful Qin will follow in Zhao’s footsteps to offer twice as much land to us (to trade for your life). How can you prevent it? This is also a severe threat to you. ” Lord Xinling said，“I see. ” He then urgently asked the king of Wei to release Fan Zuo.
