Marquis Wen of Wei Had a Drink with Tian Zifang and They Played Some Tunes Together
【原文】
魏文侯与田子方饮酒而称乐。文侯曰广钟声不比乎,左髙。”田子 方笑。文侯广奚笑?”子方曰臣闻之,君明则乐官,不明则乐音。今君申于声,臣恐君之聋于官也。”文侯“善!敬闻命.’
【今译】
魏文侯跟田子方一起边饮酒边弹奏音乐,魏文侯说:“钟声不协调 吧?左边的声音高。”田子方笑了。魏文侯问道广你笑什么呀?”田子方 说我听说,国君英明就会乐于处理国家大事,不英明就会喜欢音乐,如今您通晓音律,我担心您对国家大事不够精通啊。”魏文侯说说得好,我恭敬地遵从您的教导。”
Once Marquis Wen of the state of Wei was enjoying a drink with Tian Zifang and they played some tunes together during the banquet. Marquis Wen said, “Probably the bells are not harmonious. The tones of those on the left side are higher.” Tian Zifang laughed. Marquis Wen asked, uWhy did you laugh?” Tian Zifang said, “I have heard that if a sovereign is wise,he will care about government affairs. If not,he will be addicted to music. Now you are so familiar with tones and pitches,I am afraid that you might have overlooked government affairs, ” Marquis Wen said,“I see. I will follow your instructions respectfully, ”
