魏公叔痤为魏将
Gongshu Cuo Served as Commande in-Chief of Wei
【原文】
魏公叔痤为魏将，而与韩、赵战浍北，禽乐祚。魏王说，迎郊，以赏 田百万禄之.公叔痤反走，再拜辞曰：“夫使士卒不崩，直而不倚，挠拣 而不辟者，此吴起余教也，臣不能为也。前脉形地之险阻，决利害之备 ， 使三军之士不迷惑者，巴宁、爨襄之力也。县赏罚于前，使民昭然 信之 于后者，王之明法也。见敌之可也，鼓之不敢怠倦者，臣也。王 特为臣 之右手不倦赏臣，何也？若以臣之有功，臣何力之有乎？”王曰 广善。”于 是索吴起之后，賜之田二十万。巴宁、爨襄田各十万。
【今译】
魏国的公叔痤担任魏国的大将，跟韩国和赵国的军队在浍水以北交战， 活捉了乐祚。魏王很高兴，亲自到郊外迎接，赏賜给他一百万亩 土地^ 公叔痤倒退了几步，拜了两拜推辞说广‘让士卒不渍散，坚强不 屈，强 敌压来也不退却，这是吴起遗留下来的教导，不是我自己的。上 前观 察地势的险阻，决定攻守大计，让三军将士没有疑惑，是巴宁、爨襄 的功劳。订立赏罚制度于前，让百姓明确遵守于后，是大王英明的法 律。看到敌军有机可乘，不知疲倦地进攻他们的，是我。大王仅仅因为 我的右手一直在忙碌着而奖赏我，是可以的。如果认为我有功，那么我 出过什么力呢？”魏王说好。”于是寻找吴起的后人，赏賜给他二十万 亩土地。赏给巴宁和爨裏的后代各十万亩。
Gongshu Cuo of the state of Wei served as Commander- in-Chief to confront the combined forces of Han and Zhao on the northern bank of the Huishui River and captured Yue Zuo. The king of Wei was very happy about it，so he went to the suburbs of the capital to welcome Gongshu Cuo in person? and rewarded him with one million mu of land. Facing the marquis, Gongshu Cuo quickly walked a few steps backwards, bowed twice towards him，rejected the reward and said, "Holding officers and men together? encouraging them to be of one mind，and confronting the enemies without showing any sign of fear are instructions that come down from Wu Qi. I didn’t invent them myself. As to observing the conditions of dangerous places, using correct strategiesi and giving clear signals and orders to officers and men of all the armies，I learned these skills from the tactics of Ba Ning and Cuan Xiang. Stipulating the regulations of dispensing rewards and punishments in advance and so making people follow them later should be awise law of Your Majesty, The one who took occasion to launch constant attacks against the enemy troops was I. If Your Majesty reward me because I have always kept busy confronting our enemies, that' s all right. However, if you consider me as having made great contributions, I am not meritorious in this regard, ” The king said，“Very good," Then he looked for the offsping of Wu Qi and rewarded them with two hundred thousand mu of land, He also rewarded the offspring of Ba Ning and Cuan Xiang with one hundred thousand mu of land respectively.
【原文】
王曰公叔岂非长者哉！既为寡人胜强敌矣，又不遗贤者之后，不掩能士 之迹，公叔何可无益乎？ ”故又与田四十万，加之百万之上，使百 四十 万。故《老子》曰圣人无积，尽以为人，己愈有；既以与人，己愈多.” 公叔当之矣.
【今译】
魏王说：“公叔痤难道不是个德高望重的人吗？已经为我战胜了强大的 敌人，又不忘贤人的后代，不掩盖有才干的人的业绩.不追加公叔 痤的 赏賜怎么行呢？”所以又给他四十万吉土地，加上那一百万亩，是一 百 四十万。所以《老子》中说：“圣人自己不积蓄，都送给别人，自己就 越 富有；给了别人以后，自己拥有的就越多公叔痤就是这样的。
The king said, “Isn’t Gongshu a respectable person? After he defeated my formidable enemies，he didn’t forget the offspring of worthy people or cover up the contributions of capable scholars, Shouldn’ t I bestow more land upon him?” Then he conferred another four hundred thousand mu of land on Gongshu Cuo. The one million mu he had already obtained being added, he was rewarded one million four hundred thousand mu. So, it is said in Laozi, Sages don’t accumulate wealth for themselves. They distribute it to others，and therefore, they become even wealthier. After they present their possessions to others, more will be conferred on them. ” Gongshu Cuo’s act attests to this statement.
