Gongshu Cuo of Wei Was Sick
【原文】
魏公叔痤病，惠王往问之，曰公叔病，即不可讳，将奈社稷何？ ”公 叔 痤对曰广痤有御庶子公孙鞅，愿王以国事听之也。为弗能听，勿使出 竟王弗应，出而谓左右曰岂不悲哉！以公叔之贤，而谓寡人必以国 事 听鞅，不亦悖乎!”
【今译】
魏国的公叔痤生病了，魏惠王前去慰问他，说广公叔病了，假如不 幸 辞世，囯家该怎么办呢？”公叔座回答说我有一个家臣叫公孙鞅，希 望 大王按照他的意见来处理国家大事。如果不能听从他的意见，就不 要 让他离开魏国到别国去广魏惠王答应着，出来后却对身边的人说: “难道 不是太可悲了吗？凭着公叔的贤能，却让我一定要按照公孙鞅的 意思 来处理国家大事，不是太糊涂了吗？”
Gongshu iCuo of the state of Wei was sick and King Hui went to condole him on his illness. The king said，“Now you are sick. If we are unfortunate that we lose you，how can I govern the state?"Gongshu Cuo replied, “I have a personal officer whose name is Gongsun Yang, I hope that Your Majesty can take his advice in handling government affairs. If you don’t listen to his opinions, please make sure that he not leave for another state, " The king didn‘ t agree to do that. He went out and told the people around him, “How tragic it is! As wise and capable as Gongshu Cuo is，how could he ask me to take Gongsun Yang’s advice in managing all the government affairs? Isn’t he muddle-headed?“
【原文】
公叔痤死，公孙鞅闻之，巳葬，西之秦，孝公受而用之。秦果日以强， 魏日以削。此非公叔之悖也，惠王之悖也,悖者之患，固以不悖者为悖 。
【今译】
公叔座死后，公孙鞅听说了这件事，公叔痤下葬以后，他就西行来到秦 国，秦孝公接纳了他，并任用他做官。秦国果然日益强盛，魏国果 然 日益削弱。这并不是公叔痤糊涂，而是魏惠王本人糊涂。糊涂的人 的 毛病就在于把不糊涂的人当作是糊涂的。
Then Gongshu Cuo died，and Gongsun Yang heard about this story. After Gongshu Cuo was buried, he went to the west to the state of Qin. King Xiao of Qin accepted him and appointed him to govern the state. The state of Qin became stronger and stronger. On the other hand，the state of Wei became weaker and weaker. Hence，Gongshu Cuo was not muddle-headed, but King Hui himself was muddle-headed-The problem of muddle-headed people is that they always regard wise people as muddle-headed.
