Qin Defeated East Zhou
【原文】
秦败东周，与魏战于伊阙，杀犀武，[乘胜而留于境]。魏令公孙衍 (乘胜而留于境)请卑辞割地以讲于秦。为窦屡谓魏王曰臣不知衍之 所以听于秦之少多，然而臣能半衍之割而令秦讲于王。”王曰广奈何？” 对王不若与窦屡关内侯，而令赵。王重其行而厚奉之。因扬言曰:‘闻周、魏令窦屡以割魏于奉阳君而听秦矣。’夫周君、窦屡、奉阳君之与 穣侯，贸首之仇也。今行和者，窦屡也；制割者，奉阳君也。太后恐其不 因穰侯也，而欲败之，必以少割请合于王，而和于东周与魏也。”
【今译】
秦国军队打敗了东周，跟魏军在伊阙交战，杀死了犀武。秦军乘胜 进驻魏国境内，魏国让公孙衍用谦卑的辞令请求割让土地来跟秦国讲 和。有人为窦屡对魏王说：“我不知道公孙衍会在多大程度上听从秦 国，然而我能让公孙衍少割让一半土地并且使得秦国跟大王讲和魏 王说怎么做？ ”那人回答说大王不如封窦屡为关内侯，并且派他到赵国去，大王重视他的出使，并且给他丰厚的礼金。于是杨言道：‘听 说东周和魏囯命令窦屡割让魏国的土地给奉阳君并且听从秦国吩咐。’ 东周国君、窦屡和奉阳君跟穣侯是不共戴天的仇人。如今主持议和的 是窦屡，操纵割地的是奉阳君。秦太后担心他们不顺应穣侯，就会想破 坏此事，必定会同意少割取土地就跟大王交好，并且跟东周和魏国讲 和."
The troops of the state of Qin defeated those of East Zhou. Then they engaged the troops of the state of Wei in Yique, and killed Xi Wu, After that, they garrisoned Wei, Wei ordered Gongsun Yan to cede some territory to Qin and humbly beg it for peace talks. On behalf of Dou Lii，someone had a talk with the king of Wei and said, “I don’t know to what extent Gongsun Yan will follow the orders of the state of Qin, However, I can let Qin agree to make peace with you at the cost of only a half of the land offered by Gongsun Yan.” The king asked, “How can you do that?” The man replied，“It would be better if Your Majesty appoint Dou Lii to be Marquis of Guannei, and send him to the state of Zhao on a diplomatic mission. Attach importance to his journey to Zhao and also provide him generous money. Then you can declare as follows； ‘I heard that both East Zhou and Wei are about to ask Dou Lii to cede some of Wei’s territory to Lord Fengyang as well as follow the orders of the state of Qin.， The sovereign of East Zhou，Dou Lu and Lord Fengyang are irreconcilable enemies of Marquis Rang, Now Dou Lii is the one in charge of the peace talks with Qin，and it’s up to Lord Fengyang how much land should be ceded. The queen mother of Qin will fear that these people might act against Marquis Rang, so she will thwart this plan，and therefore will demand less land from you and agree to make peace with East Zhou and your state,”
