Zhang Yi Wanted to Unite Wei with Qin and Han
【原文】
张仪欲以魏合于秦、韩而攻齐、楚，惠施欲以魏合于齐、楚以案兵。 人多为张子于王所。惠子谓王曰小事也，谓可者、谓不可者正半，况 大事乎？以魏合于秦、韩而攻齐、楚，大事也，而王之群臣皆以为可。不 知是其可也，如是其明耶？而群臣之知术也如是其同耶？是其可也，未 若是其明也，而群臣之知术也，又非皆同也，是其有半塞也。所谓劫主 者，失其半者也
【今译】
张仪想让魏国跟秦国和韩国联合起来进攻齐国和楚国.惠施想让 魏国与夯国和楚国联合来阻止战争。很多人到魏王那里帮张仪说话。 惠施对魏王说：“对于一些小事，说可以和说不可以的正好对半，何况大 事呢？让魏国跟秦国和韩国联合起来进攻齐国和楚国，是件大事，然而 大王的大臣们却都说可以。不知道那些认为这么做可以的人是如此明 察，还是群S的智谋策略都如此相同？那些认为可以这么做的人未必 如此明察，而且群臣的智谋策略也不会完全相同。这表明有半数的意见还没有被听到。所谓胁迫君主，就是不让他听到另一半的意见
Zhang Yi wanted the state of Wei to ally with the state of Qin and the state of Han to attack the state of Qi and the state of Chu. Hui Shi hoped that Wei could build an alliance with Qi and Chu and thus prevent the military action. Many court officials expressed their support for Zhang Yi in front of the king of Wei. Hui Shi had a talk with the king of Wei and said, “Regarding insignificant matters，the ratio of those for and against them is usually one to one. It goes without saying what will happen when it comes to a big decision. Building up an alliance with Qin and Han to attack Qi and Chu is a big issue. However? all the court officials agree to it. I don’t know whether or not they are all crystal-clear that we should take this action,or whether the intelligence and strategy of all the court officials are exactly the same in this regard. As for those who agree to it，I don’t think they are all crystal-clear about the situation. And our court officials don’t exactly share the same intelligence and strategy in this case either. You couldn’t have heard the voice of the other half. The so-called 4 sovereigns being coerced? refers to those who cannot hear the opposite opinion of the other half of their people,”
