Zhang Yi Was Appointed to be Prime Minister of Wei Under the Influence of Qin
【原文】
张（子）仪以秦相魏，齐、楚怒而欲攻魏。雍沮谓张子曰：“魏之所以 相公者，以公相则国家安而百姓无患。今公相而魏受兵，是魏计过也。 齐、楚攻魏，公必危矣张子H; “然则奈何？”雍沮曰广请令齐、楚解 攻。”雍沮谓齐、楚之君曰广王亦闻张仪之约秦王乎？曰…王若相仪于 魏，齐、楚恶仪，必攻魏，魏战而胜，是齐、楚之兵折，而仪固得魏矣。若 不胜魏，魏必事秦以持其国，必割地以赂王。若欲复攻，其敝不足以应 秦此仪之所以与秦王阴相结也。今仪相魏而攻之，是使仪之计当于秦也，非所以穷仪之道也。”齐、楚之王曰：“善乃遽解攻于魏。
【今译】
张仪凭借着秦国的力量做了魏国的相国，齐国和楚国愤怒了，想进 攻魏国。雍沮对张仪说；“魏国之所以任用您做相国，因为您做了相国， 国家就会安定，并且百姓没有忧患。如今您做了相国，魏国却遭到了进 攻，这说明魏国的策略是错误的,齐国和楚国进攻魏国，您一定会有危 险的张仪说既然如此，该怎么办呢？”雍沮说我让齐国和楚国放 弃进攻雍沮对齐国和楚国的君主说大王也听说过张仪和秦王之间 的约定吗？他说：‘大王如果让我做上魏国的相国，齐国和楚国讨厌我， 一定会进攻魏国。如果魏国战胜了，齐国和楚国的军队就会被挫敗，张 仪在魏国的地位就稳固了。如果不能取胜，魏国一定会侍奉秦国来保 全自己的国家，一定会割让土地来賄赂大王。如果想重新进攻他们，他 们筋疲力尽的士卒不足以对抗秦军。’这是张仪暗中跟秦王约好的。如 今张仪做了魏国相国就进攻魏国，就会使得张仪的计策在秦国得到应验了，不是能让张仪陷入困境的办法啊。”齐国和楚国的君主说好 于是立即停止进攻魏国。
Under the influence of the might of the state of Qin, Zhang Yi was appointed to be prime minister of the state of Wei. The state of Qi and the state of Chu were angry at this and therefore planned to attack Wei. Yong Ju told Zhang Yi, “The reason that the state of Wei has appointed you to be prime minister lies in the assumptiom that if you serve as prime minister, the state will be safe and the people will be free from trouble* Now you have been appointed to be prime minister，but Wei is under threat of aggression. It shows that Wei has made a wrong decision. If Qi and Chu attack Wei, you will find yourself in danger,” Zhang Yi asked, “What shall I do then?” Yong Ju said, “Please let me ask Qi and Chu to cease their military action, ” Yong Ju had a talk with the sovereigns of Qi and Chu and said, “Have you heard of the agreement Zhang Yi made with the king of the state of Qin? It states，‘If Your Majesty helps me become prime minister of Wei, Qi and Chu will attack Wei because they both dislike me. If Wei wins the war，the troops of Qi and Chu will be defeated, and therefore my power in the state of Wei will be consolidated. If Wei loses the war，it will ask Qin for help. As a result, it will cede some land to bribe you. If you attack Qi and Chu again under such circumstances, their exhausted officers and men won’t be able to resist you,，This is the agreement Zhang Yi made secretly with the king of Qin. Now if you attack Wei after Zhang Yi has become its prime minister? Zhang Yi’s scheme with Qin will become reality-This is not the right way to get Zhang Yi into trouble.” The sovereigns of Qi and Chu said, “We see。” Then they immediately ceased the military action against Wei*
