Chen Zhen Left for Qin on a Diplomatic Mission on Behalf of Qi
【原文】
陈轸为秦使于齐，过魏，求见犀首，犀首谢陈轸。陈轸曰,轸之所 以来者，事也,公不见轸，轸且行，不得待异日矣。”犀首乃见之。陈轸 曰广公恶事乎？何为饮食而无事？无事必来。”犀首曰衍不肖，不能 得事焉，何敢恶事？ ”陈轸曰广请移天下之事于公。”犀首曰：“奈何？ ”陈 轸曰魏王使李从以车百乘使于楚，公可以居其中而疑之。公谓魏王 曰：‘臣与燕、赵故矣，数令人召E也，曰无事必来。今E无事，请谒而往无久，旬五之期王必无辞以止公。公得行，因自言于廷曰：‘臣急使燕、赵，急约车为行具/”犀首曰诺。”谒魏王，王许之，即明言使燕、 赵。
【今译】
陈轸为秦国出使齐国，路过魏国，请求拜见公孙衍，公孙衍拒绝了 陈轸。陈轸说我之所以来到这里，是因为有要事。您不见我，我就出 发了，不能等别的时间了。”公孙衍才见了他。陈轸说；“您讨厌处理政 事吗？为什么吃吃喝喝而不处理政事呢？’’公孙衍说我不肖，不能得 到处理政事的机会啊，怎敢讨厌处理政事！”陈轸说请把天下大事转 交给您。”公孙衍问广怎么办？’’陈轸说：“魏王派李从率领一百辆车子出 使楚国，您可以干预这件事，从而让楚国起疑心。您对魏王说：‘我跟燕 王和赵王是老朋友了。他们几次派人来跟我说没有事的时候一定要到 他们那里去。如今我没有什么事情做，请求到他们那里去一趟。不要 多久，就十五天的时间夕大王一定没有什么借口阻止您。您得以前往，就自己在朝廷上扬言说：‘我有急事出使燕国和赵国。赶怏为我准备车 子和行李公孙枒说好的。’’他谒见魏王，魏王同意了，随即他明确 宣布要出使燕国和赵国。
Chen Zhen left for the state of Qin on a diplomatic mission- When he passed through the state of Wei, he wanted to pay a visit to Gongsun Yan, However, Gongsun Yan refused to see him, Chen Zhen said, “I came here because I wanted to tell you something important. If you don71 want to see me，I am leaving and won’t wait any longer. ” So Gongsun Yan agreed to meet him, Chen Zhen said, “Do you hate handling government affairs? Why are you addicted to food and drink but ignore government affairs?” Gongsun Yan said，“I am unworthy and therefore don’t have the chance to handle government affairs. How dare I hate handling them?” Chen Zhen said, “Please let me devolve important affairs of the world on you, ” Gongsun Yan asked， “How can you do that?” Chen Zhen said，“The king of your state is about to send Li Cong to lead a hundred carriages to visit the state of Chu on a diplomatic mission. You can intervene it and make the state of Chu have doubts of Wei. Just tell the king of Wei as follows； ‘The sovereigns of the state of Yan and the state of Zhao are my old friends. They have sent people here to invite me to visit them several times and told me that I could pay a visit to them when I was free-Now that I am free，I beg your permission to pay a visit to them. It won’t take long. I only need about fifteen days,， For sure，His Majesty won’t have any excuse to stop you. If you are permitted to go there，you can relate the following message at court ： I am on an urgent diplomatic mission to the state of Yan and the state of Zhao，Please prepare carriages and luggage for me immediately. ”，Gongsun Yan said, “I will do that. ” He went to see the king of Wei and told him about it，and the king agreed. Then he openly declared that he was about to go to Yan and Zhao.

诸侯客闻之，皆使人告其王曰李从以车百乘使楚，犀首又以车三 十乘使燕、赵。”齐王闻之，恐后天下得魏，以事属犀首，犀首受齐事。魏 王止其行使。燕、赵闻之，亦以事属犀首^楚王闻之，曰：“李从约寡人， 今燕、齐、赵皆以事因犀首，犀首必欲寡人，寡人欲之。”乃倍李从而以事 因犀首。魏王曰所以不使犀首者，以为不可。令四国属以事，寡人亦以事因焉犀首遂主天下之事，复相魏。
【今译】
各国诸侯派来的人听说了这件事，都派人禀报他们的君主说李 从率领一百辆车子出使楚国，公孙衍又率领三十辆车子出使燕国和赵 国齐王听说了此事，担心跟魏国的交情会落在别国后面，就把国事托 付给公孙衍，公孙衍接受了齐国的政事。魏王阻止公孙衍出使。燕国 和赵国听说了此事，也把国事交给公孙衍处理。楚王听说了此事，说: “李从跟我约好要来出使，如今燕国、齐国和赵国都把国家大事托付给 了公孙衍，公孙衍一定希望我也这么做，我想把国事委托给他。”于是就 背弃了李从，把国家大事交给了公孙衍。魏王说我之所以没有任用 公孙衍是认为他没有才干。如今其他四个国家把政事交付给他处理， 我也要把国家大事交给他了于是公孙衍执掌天下大事，又做了魏国的相国
When the guests from the other states heard of this， they all sent messengers to report this to their sovereigns and said，“Li Cong is going to lead a hundred carriages to visit the state of Chu, and Gongsun Yan is also about to lead thirty carriages to visit the states of Yan and Zhao on diplomatic missions.” When the king of the state of Qi heard of this，he feared that he might delay in winning over the state of Wei， so he entrusted Gongsun Yan with government affairs, and Gongsun Yan accepted* The king of Wei cancelled Gongsun Yan’s trip to Yan and Zhao. When Yan and Zhao heard of this, they both entrusted Gongsun Yan with government affairs. When the king of the state of Chu heard of this, he said, “I have already made an appointment with Li Cong, Now Yan, Qi and Zhao have all entrusted Gongsun Yan with government affairs. Gongsun Yan must also want me to do the same. I will do so-，，He then broke the agreement with Li Cong and entrusted Gongsun Yan with government affairs. The king of Wei said，“The reason that I haven’t appointed Gongsun Yan to any important post is that I used to think that he was incapable. Now that those four states have all entrusted him with government affairs, I will do the same. ” As a result，Gongsun Yan was in charge of important affairs all over the world and was appointed as prime minister of the state of Wei.
