庞葱与太子质于邯郸
Pang Cong and the Crown Prince of Wei Stayed in Handan as Hostages
【原文】
庞葱与太子质于邯郸，谓魏王曰广今一人言市有虎，王信之乎？ ”王 曰广否二人言市有虎，王信之乎？ ”王曰寡人疑之矣三人言市有虎，王信之乎？ ”王曰寡人信之矣。”庞葱曰夫市之无虎明矣，然而 三人言而成虎。今邯郸去大梁也远于市，而议臣者过于三人矣，愿王察 之矣。”王曰寡人自为知。”于是辞行，而谗言先至。后太子罢质，果不 得见。
【今译】
庞葱要和魏国太子到邯郸做人质，他对魏王说现在假如有一个 人说市场上有只老虎，大王相信吗？”魏王说；“不信。”“有两个人说市场 上有只老虎，大王相信吗？”魏王说：“我怀疑是不是真的三个人说市场上有只老虎，大王相信吗？”魏王说广我信了。”庞葱说市场上没有 老虎是明摆着的，然而三个人说有，您就认为真有老虎了。如今邯郸距 离大梁比市场远得多，而非议我的人超过三个，希望大王明察啊,魏王 说我自己知道怎么做广于是庞葱辞行前往赵国，可是关于他的谗言 随后就传了回来。后来太子做人质的期限到了，庞葱果然没有得到召 见.
Pang Cong and the crown prince of the state of Wei were about to leave for the capital of Handan of the state of Zhao to serve as hostages. Before they left，Pang Cong went to say good-bye to the king and said, “If somebody said there was a tiger in the market，would you believe it?’，“No.”‘‘If two people said there was a tiger in the market, would you believe it?”“I would doubt it. ”“If three people said there was a tiger in the market, would you believe it?”“I would believe it. Pang Cong said，“Obviously there is no tiger in the market. However, if there were three people saying there was a tiger in the market，you would believe it. Handan is far from here. However，there could be more than three people speaking ill of me here, I hope that you will remember this, ” The king said, “I understand,” After Pang Cong left for Handan, slanders arose against him. After the crown prince’s term as a hostage expired, Pang Cong was not recalled.
