芒卯谓秦王
Mang Mao Had a Talk with Qin’s King
【原文】
芒卯谓秦王曰王之士未有为之中者也。臣闻明王不肾中而行。 王之所欲于魏者，长羊、王屋、洛林之地也。王能使臣为魏之司徒，则臣 能使魏献之。”秦王曰善。”因任之以为魏之司徒。
【今译】
芒卯对秦王说；“大王的士人中没有为您做内应的Q我听说英明的 君主必须依赖内应来行事。大王想从魏国得到的是长羊、王屋、洛林等 地区Q大王如果能让我做上魏国的司徒，我就能让魏国把这些地区进 献给您秦王说好。”于是任命他为魏国的司徒。
Mang Mao had a talk with the king of the state of Qin and said，“None of Your Majesty? s scholars can join other statesy governments and work for you as provocateurs. I heard that a wise sovereign will definitely resort to using provocateurs when taking big actions. What Your Majesty want are the areas of Changyang, Wangwu and Luolin. If Your Majesty can let me be Situ (referring to the title of a post in charge of administering civil affairs) of the state of Wei，I can make Wei cede these areas to you. ” The king of Qin said，“Very good. ” Then he appointed Mang Mao to be Situ of the state of Wei.

谓魏王曰王所患者，上地也。秦之所欲于魏者，长羊、王屋、洛林 之地也。王献之秦，则上地无忧患。因请以下兵东击齐，攘地必远 矣魏王曰：“善因献之秦。
【今译】
芒卯对魏王说大王所担心的是上地。秦国想从魏国得到的是长 羊、王屋、洛林等地区。大王把这些地区献给秦国，那上地就没有忧患 了。趁机请秦国出兵与我们一起向东进攻齐国，一定能夺得大片的土 地。”魏王说好。”于是把长羊、王屋、洛林等地区献给秦国0
Mang Mao told the king of Wei, “Your Majesty is worrying about the safety of Shangdi. What the state of Qin wants are the areas of Changyang, Wangwu and Luolin. If Your Majesty present these areas to Qin,Shangdi will be free from threat. Then we can take occasion to ask Qin to send troops to the east to attack the state of Qi. Certainly we can enlarge our territory to a great extent,，，The king of Wei said，uVery good.，’ Then he presented those areas to Qin.

地入数月，而秦兵不下^魏王谓芒卯曰广地已人数月，而秦兵不下，何也？”芒卯曰广臣有死罪。虽然，臣死则契折于秦，王无以责秦。 王因赦其罪，臣为王责约于秦。”
【今译】
土地献出几个月了，然而秦国却没有出兵。魏王对芒卯说广已经把土地献给秦国几个月了，然而秦国却没有出兵，这是什么原因？”芒卯 说我犯下了死罪。虽然如此，我死了，秦国就会赖账，大王没有什么 凭据指责秦国，我为大王到秦国讨债
Several months after those areas were ceded to Qin, Qin hadn’t sent troops as promised. The king of Wei asked Mang Mao, “Now we have ceded those areas to Qin several months ago，but it still hasn’t sent its troops. Why?” Mang Mao said，“I would be sentenced to death because of such an error. Now，if 1 am sentenced to death，Qin will go back on its word，and you won’t have any means to demand the land. If Your Majesty absolve me，I will urge Qin to keep its word. ”

乃之秦，谓秦王曰广魏之所以献长羊、王屋、洛林之地者，有意欲以 下大王之兵东击齐也。今地已人而秦兵不可下，臣则死人也。虽然，后 山东之士，无以利事王者矣。”秦王懼然曰：“国有事，未澹下兵也，今以 兵从后十日，秦兵下。芒卯并将秦、魏之兵以东击齐，启地二十二县。
【今译】
于是芒卯来到秦国，对秦王说魏国之所以献出长羊、王屋、洛林 等地区，是想用大王的兵力向东进攻齐国。如今土地已经献出，但是秦 国却没有出兵，那我就犯下死罪了。虽然如此，以后山东地区的士人， 没有人会做对大王有利的事了。”秦王害怕地说：“国家有事，没有来得 及出兵啊，现在就派兵出发十天后，秦国出兵，芒卯同时率领秦国和 魏国的军队向东进攻齐国，占领二十二个县。
Then Mang Mao went to the state of Qin, had a talk with the king and said，“The reason that Wei has ceded Changyang, Wangwu and Luolin lies in the fact that it hopes that Your Majesty might agree to dispatch troops to the east to attack the state of Qi. However, those areas have been ceded to you, but the troops of Qin still haven’t moved* For this，I should be sentenced to death. Moreover, scholars from the states located east of Mount Xiao will not serve Your Majesty in future.” The king of Qin was scared and said, “My state has some problems. That’s why 1 haven’t found the time to dispatch my troops. I will send them to follow you immediately. ” Ten days later, the troops of Qin were sent. Mang Mao commanded the allied forces built by Qin and Wei to march towards the east to attack the state of Qi and occupied twenty-two of its counties.
