魏王问张旄
Wei’s King Asked Zhang Mao a Question
【原文】
魏王问张旄曰：“吾欲与秦攻韩，何如？ ”张旄对曰韩且坐而胥亡 乎？且割而从天下乎？”王曰韩且割而从天下。”张旄曰广韩怨魏乎？ 怨秦乎？”王y广怨魏。”张旄臼韩强秦乎？强魏乎？”王曰：“强秦。”张 旄曰韩且割而从其所强，，与所不怨乎？且割而从其所不强，与其所 怨乎？ ”王曰韩将割而从其所强，与其所不怨。”张旄曰：“攻韩之事，王 自知矣/’
【今译】
魏王问张旄广我想跟秦国一起进攻韩国，怎么样？”张旄回答说: “韩国将坐待灭亡呢，还是将割让土地来屈从于天下各国？”魏王说韩 国将割让土地来屈从于天下各国。”张旄说：“韩国怨恨魏国呢，还是怨 恨秦国？’’魏王说：“怨恨魏国。”张旄说韩国认为秦国强大呢，还是认 为魏国强大？”魏王说广认为秦国强大。”张旄说韩国将会割让土地并 屈服于它认为强大的国家、跟自己不怨恨的国家结盟呢，还是将割让土 地并屈服于它认为不强大的国家、跟自己所怨恨的国家结盟？”魏王说: “韩国将割让土地并且屈服于它认为强大的国家，跟自己不怨恨的国家 结盟。”张旄说是否进攻韩国一事，大王自己心里明白了。”
The king of the state of Wei asked Zhang Mao, “I want to join the state of Qin in attacking the state of Han, What do you think about that?” Zhang Mao replied, “Do you think Han will wait to be destroyed? Or do you think it will cede some land and thus submit to other states in the world?” The king said，“Han will cede some land and submit to other states.” Zhang Mao asked, “Do you think Han hates our state or the state of Qin?” The king said，“It hates Wei.” Zhang Mao asked, “Do you think Han considers Qin more powerful，or our state more powerful?” The king said, “It considers Qin more powerful. ” Zhang Mao asked further, “Do you think Han will cede land and submit to the more powerful state as well as ally with the state it doesn’t hate, or will it cede land and submit to the less powerful state as well as ally with the state it hates?” The king said, “Han will cede land and submit to the more powerful state as well as ally with the state it doesn’t hate. “ Zhang Mao said，“Then whether or not we should attack Han is clear to you. ”
