白珪谓新城君
Bai Gui Told Lord Xincheng
【原文】
白珪谓新城君曰广夜行者能无为奸，不能禁狗使无吠己也。故臣 能无议君于王，不能禁人议臣于君也。”
【今译】
白圭对新城君说在夜间行走的人能不做坏事，但不能阻止狗，让 它不朝自己狂吠。因此我能够不在大王面前说您的坏话，但不能禁止 别人在您面前说我的坏话。”
Bai Gui told Lord Xincheng，“People walking during the night can restrain themselves from committing any misconduct. However，they cannot make dogs stop yapping at them. Accordingly, I won’t speak ill of you in front of His Majesty. However，I cannot stop others speaking ill of me in front of you. ’’
