成阳君欲以韩魏听秦
Lord Chengyang Wanted Han and Wei to Take Orders from Qin
【原文】
成阳君欲以韩、魏听秦，魏王弗利。白圭谓魏王曰广王不如阴侯人 说成阳君曰君人秦，秦必留君，而以多割于韩矣。韩不听，秦必留君 而伐韩矣。故君不如安行求质于秦。’成阳君必不人秦。秦、韩不敢合, 则王重矣。”
【今译】
成阳君想让韩国和魏国服从秦国，魏王认为这对自己不利。白圭 对魏王说大王不如暗中派人游说成阳君道：‘如果您到秦国去，秦国 一定会扣留您，而以此要挟韩国多割让一些土地。韩国不听从的话，秦 国一定会扣留您并且攻打韩国。所以您不如慢点走，并且要求秦国送 人质来。’成阳君一定不会到秦国去了。秦国和韩国不能联合，大王的 地位就重要了。”
Lord Chengyang wanted both the state of Han and the state of Wei to take orders from the state of Qin，but the king of Wei considered that it was disadvantageous to do so. Bai Gui had a talk with the king of Wei and suggested to him, “You’d better secretly send someone to take a message to Lord Chengyang as follows： ‘If you enter the state of Qin，it will definitey detain you there to coerce the state of Han into ceding more land to it. If Han rejects it, Qin will detain you as well as launch attacks against Han. Hence，you’d better postpone your journey to Qin and ask it to send a hostage here.，Thus Lord Chengyang will definitely not go to the state of Qin. Then Qin and Han won’t ally with each other， and as a result, you will become powerful and influential. ”
