申子请仕其从兄官
Shen Buhai Recommended His Cousin
【原文】
申子请仕其从兄官，昭侯不许也，申子有怨色。昭侯曰非所谓学 于子者也。听子之谒而废子之道乎？又亡其行子之术而废子之谒乎? 子尝教寡人循功劳、视次第。今有所求，此我将奚听乎？”申子乃辟舍请 罪曰：“君真其人也！”
【今译】
申不害为自己的堂兄请求官职，韩昭候不答应，申不害表现出怨恨 的神色。韩昭侯说广这不符合我从您那里学来的道理啊。我是听从您 的请求从而废弃您的主张呢，还是推行您的主张从而否定您的请求？ 您曾经教导我要依据人们的功劳、核查他们的才能而授予他们官职，如 今您有求于我，我该听从您哪方面的意见呢？”于是申不害离开自己的 座位请罪道：“大王真是我理想中的君主啊。”
Shen Buhai recommended his cousin to be employed by the government of the state of Han, but Marquis Zhao did not agree，so Shen Buhai appeared unhappy. Marquis Zhao said, “This is against what I have learned from you. Should I overlook your instructions and accept you recommendation? Or should I follow your instructions and reject your recommendation? Once you told me to employ people by checking their contributions to the state and inspecting their capability. Now you are asking me to employ your relative. What do you think I should do then?” Shen Buhai then left his seat and appologized to the marquis, “You are really the sort of person I admire. ”
