Five States Allied with Each Other to Attack Qin
【原文】
五国约而攻秦,楚王为从长不能伤秦，兵罢而留于成皋。魏顺谓 市丘君曰五国罢，必攻市丘以偿兵费。君资臣，臣请为君止天下之攻 市丘。”市丘君曰广善。”因遣之。
【今译】
楚国、韩国、赵国、魏国和燕国五个国家联合起来进攻秦国，楚王是 这个联盟的首领。五国联军不能挫敗秦国，军队疲惫，便留守在成皋。 魏顺对市丘君说五国撤军的时候，一定会进攻市丘来补偿自己的军 费开销。您为我提供资助，我为您解除天下各国联军对市丘的进攻。” 市丘君说好的. ”于是派他上路了。
Five states-—the states of Chu, Han, Zhao, Wei and Yan built allied forces to attack the state of Qin. The king of the state of Chu was the leader commanding this military force. However, they failed to cause any concrete damage to the state of Qin，so they stopped military operations and were stationed in Chenggao. Wei Shun had a talk with Lord Shiqiu and said，“If the allied forces of these five states stop their military action against Qin，they will definitely attack Shiqiu to compensate for their military expenditure on this war. If you can render me some support, I will stop them from attacking Shiqiu on your behalf. 19 Lord Shiqiu said, “Excellent. ”Then he granted Wei Shun his permission,

魏顺南见楚王，曰广王约五国而西伐秦，不能伤秦，天下且以是轻 王而重秦。故王胡不卜交乎？”楚王奈何？”魏顺曰广天下罢，必攻市丘以偿兵费。王令之勿攻市丘。五国重王，且听王之言而不攻市丘; 不重王，且反王之言而攻市丘。然则王之轻重必明矣故楚王卜交而 市丘存。
【今译】
魏顺向南谒见楚王，说大王联合五个国家向西进攻秦国，不能对 秦国构成伤害，夭下各国将因此而轻视大王、重视秦国。所以大王何不 试探一下跟各国的交情呢？”楚王说：“怎么试探？”魏顺说广天下各国撖军的时候，一定会进攻市丘来补偿军费开销.大王命令它们不要进攻 市丘。五个国家如果重视大王，就会听从大王的命令而不进攻市丘；不 重视大王，就会违背大王的命令而进攻市丘。这样一来，大王地位的轻 重一定就会明了 了。”所以楚王试探跟各国的交情而市丘得到保全。

So, why not test your relations with them?” The king of Chu asked, “How can I test my relations with them?” Wei Shun said'，“When these states stop their military action against the state of Qin, they will certainly attack Shiqiu to compensate for their military expenditures for this attack. So you can order them not to attack Shiqiu. If they really attach importance to you, they will carry out your order and not attack Shiqiu. If they don’t attach importance to you, they will act against your order and attack Shiqiu. As a result, whether or not they attach importance to you will be clear. ” Accordingly, the king of Chu tested his relations with other states, and as a result ? Shiqiu survived.
