韩公仲谓向寿
Gongzhong of Han Sent an Emissary to See Xiang Shou
【原文】
韩公仲谓向寿曰：“禽困覆车。公破韩，辱公仲，公仲收国复事秦， 自以为必可以封。今公与楚解中，封小令尹以（桂）[杜]阳。秦、楚合， 复攻韩，韩必亡。公仲躬率其私徒以斗于秦，愿公之熟计之也。”向寿 曰吾合秦、楚，非以当韩也，子为我谒之公仲，曰广秦、韩之交可合 也对曰愿有复于公。谚曰：‘贵其所以贵者贵。’今王之爱习公也 不如公孙郝，其知能公也不如甘茂。今二人者皆不得亲于事矣，而公独与王主断于国者，彼有以失之也。公孙郝党于韩，而甘（戊）[茂]党于 魏，故王不信也。今秦、楚争强，而公党于楚，是与公孙郝、甘茂同道也。 公何以异之？人皆言楚之多变也，而公必之，是自为贵也。公不如与王 谋其变也，善韩以备之，若此则无祸矣。韩氏先以国从公孙郝，而后委 国于甘茂，是韩，公之仇也。今公言善韩以备楚，是外举不辟仇也。
【今译】
韩国的相国公仲派人对向寿说：“野兽被逼急了也能撞翻猎人的车 子。您攻克了韩国的军队，侮辱了公仲，公仲收拾韩国残局，又重新侍 奉秦国，他自以为一定能够得到秦王的封赏了。如今您跟楚国和解，楚 国把秦国的杜阳分封给小令尹。秦国与楚国联合，再次进攻韩国，韩国 一定会灭亡，那样公仲将亲自率领自己的队伍跟秦国决斗，希望您仔 细考虑一下这件事。”向寿说：“我让秦国和楚国联合起来，并不是要对 抗韩国。您替我告诉公仲，说秦国跟韩国可以缔结邦交了公仲的使 者回答说我还想对您说句话。有句俗话说：‘尊重别人所尊重的东西，自己也能受到尊重。’如今秦王对您的宠信比不上公孙郝，他认为您 的智慧和才千比不上甘茂。如今这两个人都不能插手处理国家大事，而唯独您跟秦王一起决断国家大事，是因为他们二人有失误的缘故。 公孙郝跟韩国结为一派，而甘茂跟魏国结为一派，所以秦王不信任他们 了 ,如今秦国跟楚国互相争夺霸权，而您却跟楚国结为一派，这是跟公 孙郝与甘茂走同一条道路啊，您用什么跟他们区别开来呢？人们都说 楚国非常变化多端，而您却一定要跟它亲近，这是自己寻求尊责^您不 如跟秦王一起谋划对付楚国的善变，跟韩国搞好关系来防范楚国，如果 是这样，就没有灾祸了,韩国起先把国事交付给公孙郝，后来又把国家 委托给甘茂，这样一来，韩国就是您的仇雠了。如今您宣称跟韩国亲近 来防范楚国，这就是举荐外人不回避自己的仇敌啊
Gongzhong,the prime minister of the state of Han，sent an emissary to see Xiang Shou and say, “If wild animals are goaded too badly, they will turn over the hunters’ carriages. Now you have defeated the troops of Han and humiliated Gongzhong. After the debacle，Gongzhong put the state in order and led it to submit to Qin’s authority. He thought that Qin would definitely confer on him some land or a title. Now you are aiming at establishing diplomatic relations with the state of Chu and therefore the king of Chu has conferred Duyang of the state of Qin on the Junior Prime Minister. If Qin and Chu unite with each other, they will definitely launch military action against Han. As a resultt Han will .surely be destroyed. Therefore, Gongzhong will lead his private troops to fight the troops of Qin. I hope that you think about it carefully. ” Xiang Shou said, “I don’t intend to let Qin and Chu unite with each other to counteract Han. Please take a message to Gongzhong for me and tell him that Qin and Han can establish diplomatic relations with each other. ” The emissary replied, “I also have something to tell you. There is a saying which says，”If you value things valued by others, you will be valued by others in return.” Now His Majesty appreciates Gongsun Hao much more than appreciates you. And he considers that you are not as wise and capable as Gan Mao. Nonetheless，these two people are not able to manage government affairs in person. However, you are the only one who can administer the state along with His Majesty. Gongsun Hao is very close to Han and Gan Mao is very close to Wei, but both of them act imprudently，so they are not trusted by His Majesty. Now Qin and Chu are vying with each other for power and in being addressed as Lord-protector. But you side firmly with Chu. Thus you are following the path of Gongsun Hao and Gan Mao, How can you differentiate yourself from them? All people regard Chu as a very unreliable state. However， you support it unconditionally. Therefore, you are trying to gain power for yourself by doing so. You’d better conspire with His Majesty to deal with Chu’s caprice and at the same time hobnob with Han to guard against Chu, Then you will be free from trouble. At first, Han entrusted government affairs to Gongsun Hao and then it turned to Gan Mao, Therefore，Han is your enemy. If you openly announce to establish good relations with Han to prepare for any incidents that might be caused by Chu, you will gain a high reputation of recommending your enemy."
【原文】
向寿曰吾甚欲韩合。”对曰广甘茂许公仲以武遂，反宜阳之民。 今公徒令收之，甚难。”向子曰然则奈何？武遂终不可得已。”对曰: “公何不以秦为韩求（颖）[颍]川于楚？此乃韩之寄地也。公求而得之，是令行于楚而以其地德韩也；公求而弗得，是韩、楚之怨不解而交走秦 也。秦、楚争强，而公过楚以（攻）[收]韩，此利于秦向子曰：“奈何？” 对曰：“此善事也,甘茂欲以魏取齐，公孙郝欲以韩取齐，今公取宜阳以 为功，收楚、韩以安之，而诛齐、魏之罪，是以公孙郝、甘茂之无事也。”
【今译】
向寿说我很想跟韩国和好。”公仲的使者回答说甘茂许诺公仲 把武遂归还给韩国，让宜阳的百姓返回家园。如今您轻易收回了武遂， 这样一来，很难跟韩国和好啊。”向寿说广既然如此，该怎么办呢？终究 不能收回武遂吗？”使者回答说：“您为什么不凭借秦国的势力为韩国索要楚国的颍川？这是楚国从韩国夺取的土地。您索要并且能得到它，您的命令就能在楚国得到推行，而且能利用这块土地让韩国对您感恩 戴德。如果您索要了而不能得到，韩国和楚国之间的怨恨就不能化解, 从而都会投靠秦国。秦国跟楚国互相争夺霸权，而您指责楚国的过失 来拉拢韩国，这对秦国是有利的向寿问该怎么办呢？ ”使者回答说: “这是件好事甘茂想通过魏国夺取齐国的土地，公孙郝想通过韩国夺 取齐国的土地，如今您夺取宜阳作为自己的功劳，争取到楚国和韩国， 使得宜阳安全稳固，并声讨齐国和魏国的罪过，这样一来，公孙郝和甘 茂就无事可做了
Xiang Shou said, “I want to establish good relations with Han very much. ” The emissary replied, “Gan Mao promised Gongzhong that he would return Wusui to Han and send the displaced people of Yiyang back home. Now you are going to take Yiyang back. Therefore, it is very difficult for you to establish friendly relations with Han. Xiang Shou asked, “What shall I do then? Shall I give up Wusui for good?” The emissary replied, “Why not ask Chu to return Yingchuan to Han through the might of Qin? The land used to belong to Han and was taken over by Chu. If you can make Chu give it back to us，it means that your orders will be carried out by Chu, In addition, Han will be grateful to you because of the land- If not，it means that the rancor between Han and Chu cannot be smoothed over and therefore both these states will vie with each other in submitting to Qin’ s authority. Since Qin and Chu are fighting for power, if you reprimand Chu to buy off Han, this is advantageous to Qin, ” Xiang Shou asked，“What shall I do then?” The emissary replied, “This is a good thing, Gan Mao wishes to manipulate Wei to obtain land from Qi, and Gongsun Hao wishes to manipulate Han to obtain land from Qi. Now if you occupy Yiyang and regard this your own contribution T secure its safety by winning over Chu and Han and reprimanding the sins of Qi and Wei, Gongsun Hao and Gan Mao will totally lose their power, ”
