Gongzhong Served as Prime Minister of Han
【原文】
韩公仲相，齐、楚之交善秦。秦、魏遇，且以善齐而绝齐乎楚。[楚] 王使景鲤之秦，鲤与于秦、魏之遇。楚王怒景鲤，恐齐以楚遇为有阴于 秦、魏也，且罪景鲤。
【今译】
公仲做韩国的相国，齐国和楚国争相跟秦国交好。秦王和魏王会 晤，即将跟齐国建立友好邦交，并且让齐国跟楚国断绝关系。楚王派景 鲤出使秦国，景鲤参加了秦王和魏王的会晤。楚王生景鲤的气，恐怕齐 国会认为楚国参与会晤会跟秦国和魏国暗中有什么勾当，将要治景紐 的罪。
When Gongzhong was serving as prime minister of the state of Han, both the state of Qi and the state of Chu vied with each other in hobnobbing with the state of Qin, The king of Qin and the king of Wei met each other to discuss winning over the state of Qi and making Qi cut off its ties with the state of Chu. The king of Chu sent Jing Li to the state of Qin on a dipomatic mission, and Jing Li took part in the meeting between Qin and Wei, For this reason, the king of Chu was angry with Jing Li, because he feared that the state of Qi might think that his state may have some secret deals with Qin and Wei. Therefore, he was about to punish Jing Li.
【原文】
为谓楚王曰臣贺鲤之与于遇也，秦、魏之遇也，将以合齐、秦而 绝齐于楚也。今鲤与于遇，齐无以信魏之合己于秦而攻于楚也，齐又畏国了，齐国又担心楚国跟秦国和魏国暗地里会有什么约定，一定会重视楚之有阴于秦、魏也，必重楚。故鲤之与于遇，王之大资也。今鲤不与 于遇，魏之绝齐于楚明矣。齐（楚）信之，必轻王。故王不如无罪景鲤, 以视齐于有秦、魏，齐必重楚，而且疑秦、魏于齐。”王曰诺因不罪而 益其列
【今译】
有人为景鲤对楚王说我祝贺景鲤参加了这次会晤.秦王和魏王 会晤，将要把齐国和秦国联合起来，从而让齐国跟楚国断绝关系。如今 景鯉参加这会晤，齐国就不相信魏国会振合它跟秦国联合起来进攻楚国。所以景鲤参与这次会晤，对大王是非常有利的。假如景鲤没有 参加这次会晤，魏国让齐国跟楚国绝交就很明显了。齐国相信了，就一 定会轻视大王。所以大王不如不怪罪景鲤，以此向齐国显示楚国跟秦 国和魏国保持邦交，齐国一定会重视楚国，而且还能让齐国对秦国和魏 国产生怀疑。”楚王说好的。”于是没有怪罪景鲤，而且还升了他的职 位.

Hence，it would be better if you not punish Jing Li. Thus you will give a signal to the state of Qi that you still maintain close relations with Qin and Wei. As a result, Qi will definitely attach importance to your state. Moreover, you will make Qi doubt the sincerity of Qin and Wei. ” The king said，”Perfect, ” Then he not only did not punish Jing Li, but promoted him to a higher rank.
