Someone Had a Talk with Lord Xincheng
【原文】
谓新城君曰；“公叔、伯婴恐秦、楚之内几瑟也，公何不为韩求质子 于楚？楚王听而人质子于韩，则公叔、伯婴必知秦、楚之不以几瑟为事也，必以韩合于秦、楚矣。秦、楚挟韩以窘魏，魏氏不敢东，是齐孤也 公又令秦求质子于楚，楚不听，则怨结于韩。韩挟齐、魏以眄楚，楚王必 重公矣。公挟秦、楚之重，以积德于韩，则公叔、伯婴必以国事公矣。”
【今译】
有人对新城君说：“公叔和伯婴害怕秦国和楚国帮助几瑟回国，您为什么不为韩国要求把几瑟送到楚国去做人质？如果楚王听从了并且把王子送来韩国做人质，公叔和伯婴就一定会明白秦国和楚国不把几 瑟当回事了，必定会让韩国跟秦国和楚国结交。秦国和楚国操纵韩国 来钳制魏国，魏国一定不敢向东跟齐国联合，这样一来，齐国就孤立了。 您再让秦国跟楚国索要韩国送去的人、质，楚国不听从的话，就会跟韩国 结怨，韩国倚仗齐国和魏国而藐视楚国，楚王一定会重视您的，您掌握 着秦国和楚国的重权，对韩国多施加恩德，公叔和伯婴就一定会用韩国 侍奉您的
Someone had a talk with Lord Xincheng and said, “Gongshu and Bo Ying are in fear that the state of Qin and the state of Chu might unite with each other to help Ji Se return to the state of Han. Why not suggest that the state of Han send Ji Se to the state of Chu as a hostage? If the king of Chu listens to you and sends one of his princes to Han as a hostage, Gongshu and Bo Ying will realize that Qin and Chu won’t be at Ji Se? s service. Accordingly，they will lead the state of Han to build an alliance with Qin and Chu, With the power of the state of Han. Qin and Chu will take control of the state of Wei, As a result，Wei won’t dare ally with the state of Qi in the east. Therefore t the state of Qi will become isolated. Then you can suggest to the state of Qin that it ask the state of Chu for the hostage from the state of Han. If the king of Chu rejects this demand，he will be at enmity with the state of Han, In this case，with the power of the state of Qi and the state of Wei, the state of Han can pose a threat to the state of Chu. As a result，the king of Chu will definitely attach importance to you. Based on the might of the state of Qin and the state of Chu，you can do favours for the state of Han. Accordingly, Gongshu and Bo Ying will lead their state to work for you.”
