张丑之合齐楚讲于魏
Zhang Chou Arranged for Qi and Chu to Make Peace with Wei
【原文】
张丑之合齐、楚讲于魏也，谓韩公仲曰：“今公疾攻魏之运，魏急，则 必以地和于齐、楚，故公不如勿攻也。魏缓，则必战。战胜，攻运而取之 易矣；战不胜，则魏且内之。”公仲曰诺。”张丑因谓齐、楚曰韩已与 魏矣。以为不然，则盖观公仲之攻也。”公仲不攻，齐、楚恐，因讲于魏而 不告韩。
【今译】
张丑想撮合齐国和楚国跟魏国讲和，对韩国的公仲说广现在您如 果加紧进攻魏国的运，魏国吃紧了，就一定会割让土地来跟齐国和楚国 讲和，所以您不如不进攻魏国.魏国的形势缓和了，就一定会跟齐国和 楚国交战。魏国在战争中取胜，我们进攻运就容易占领它了 ；不能在战 争中取胜，魏国就会把运献给我们。”公仲说广好的。”于是张丑就对齐 国和楚国说：“韩国已经跟魏国结盟了，你们要是不相信的话，就等着 瞧公仲是否进攻魏国。”公仲没有进攻魏国，齐国和楚国恐惧了，就跟魏 国讲和而没有告知韩国。
Zhang Chou arranged for the state of Qi and the state of Chu to make peace with the state of Wei，and he told Gongzhong of the state of Han, “Now you are launching a sudden attack on the region of Yun of the state of Wei, If Wei finds itself in severe danger，it will cede some land to Qi and Chu to reach a ceasefire with them. Hence, you’d better give up attacking Yun. Thus the situation in the state of Wei will be smoothed over. Therefore, it will definitey engage in a war with Qi and Chu. If it defeats Qi and Chu, it will be easier for you to conquer Yun (due to the exhaustion of the troops of Wei because of the war with Qi and Chu), If it cannot defeat Qi and Chu, Wei will present this region to you. ” Gongzhong said，“I see, ” Then Zhang Chou told the sovereigns of Qi and Chu，“The state of Han has already made an alliance with the state of Wei. If you don’t believe that, please wait and see whether Gongzhong will attack it or not.” Gongzhong did not attack Yun. Qi and Chu were afraid, so they both made peace with Wei without notifying the state of Han in advance.
