Duan Chan Had a Talk with Lord Xincheng
【原文】
段产谓新城君曰夫宵行者能无为奸，而不能令狗无吠己。今臣处郎中，能无议君于王，而不能令人毋议臣于君。愿君察之也。”
【今译】
段产对新城君说在夜间赶路的人能不做坏事，却不能让狗不冲着自己狂吠^如今我处在郎中的位子上，能不在大王面前说您的坏话， 却不能让别人不在您面前说我的坏话。希望您明察啊。”
Duan Chan had a talk with Lord Xincheng and said, “A person travelling at night can restrain himself from committing any misconduct. However，he cannot stop a dog from yapping at him. Now I am serving as Langzhong in the government. I won’t speak ill of you in front of His Majesty, However，I cannot stop others from speaking ill of me in front of you，Sire. Please think about that, ”
