Duangan Yue Said to Lord Xincheng
【原文】
段干越(人)谓新城君曰王良之弟子驾云取千里马，遇造父之弟 子。造父之弟子曰：‘马不千里。’王良弟子曰：‘马，千里之马也；服，千 里之服也。而不能取千里，何也？’曰：‘子纆牵长。故缋牵于事，万分之 一也，而难千里之行。’今臣虽不肖，于秦亦万分之一也，而相国见臣不 释塞者，是缰牵长也。”
【今译】
段干越对新城君说王良的弟子赶着车，说自己赶的是千里马，遇 到造父的弟子。造父的弟子说：‘这马跑不了一千里J王良的弟子说: ‘我两边的马是千里马，中间的马是千里马，却不能跑一千里，为什么 呢？，造父的弟子说：‘你牵马的缰绳太长。缰绳对于赶路这件事来说, 只起万分之一的作用，如果不合适，却能影响马跑不了 一千里。，如今我 虽然不肖，对于秦国也能起到万分之一的作用啊.但是相国见了我却不能为我排除仕途上的陣碍，这如同缰绳太长一般。”
Duangan Yue said to Lord Xincheng，“Wang Liang’s disciple drives a carriage and announces that his horses can run one thousand li in one day. He runs into a disciple of Zao Fu. Zao Fu ? s disciple says, ( Your horses cannot run one thousand ." ’ Wang Liangy s disciple says，”Those on the two sides are swift horses, and those in the middle are also swift horses. Why can’t they run a thousand li?? Zao Fu’s disciple answers，‘Well, your reins are too long. It’s true that the reins only play a minimal role in driving the carriage. However，if they don’t have the right length, your horses cannot travel one thousand li. Although I am unworthy, I also play a minimal role in the state of Qin, Nonetheless, the prime minister has not removed the obstacles to my official career. In this case, my reins are also too long. ”
