赵且伐燕
Zhao Was Going to Attack Yan
【原文】
赵且伐燕。苏代为燕谓惠王曰广今者臣来，过易水，蚌方出曝，而 鹬啄其肉，蚌合而柑其喙。鹬曰广今日不雨，明日不雨，即有死蚌。’蚌 亦谓鹬曰：‘今日不出，明日不出，即有死鹬/两者不肯相舍，渔者得而 并禽之。今赵且伐燕，燕、赵久相支，以弊大众，臣恐强秦之为渔父也！ 故愿王之熟计之也。”惠王曰广善广乃止。
【今译】
赵国即将进攻燕国，苏代替燕国去游说赵惠文王，说：“今天我来这 里的路上，经过易水，一只蚌刚好出来晒太阳，而一只鹬啄住了蚌的肉， 蚌合上自己的贝壳，夹住了鹬的喙。鹬说：‘今天不下雨，明天不下雨， 就会有一只死蚌蚌也对鹓说今天不放你，明天不放你，就会有一只 死鹖/两个都不肯松开对方，渔夫将它们一起捉住了。如今赵国将要 攻打燕国，燕国和赵国长期对峙，使得老百姓疲惫不堪，我担心强大的 秦国将会坐收渔翁之利啊。所以希望大王仔细考虑这件事.’赵惠文王 说说得好于是停止进攻燕国。
The state of Zhao was going to attack the state of Yan, On behalf of Yan，Su Qin went to persuade King Huiwen of Zhao and said，“Today on my way here, when I crossed the Yishui River, a clam came out of the water to bask itself. But a snipe pecked the clam’s flesh. So the clam closed its shell and therefore trapped the snipe’s beak. The snipe said， It won’t rain today. It won’t rain tomorrow. Then there will be a dead clam.，And the clam told the snipe, ‘I won’t set you free today. I won’t set you free tomorrow. Then there will be a dead snipe. Neither of them would give in. A fisherman caught the two of them together. Now Zhao is going to attack Yan. Yan and Zhao have been confronting each other for a long time and therefore the people on both sides are exhausted. I am afraid that the powerful Qin will take advantage of you just like the fisherman did. So I hope Your Majesty think about it carefully. ” King Huiwen said，“I agree with you. ” He then gave up his plan for attacking Yan.
