Qi, Han and Wei Launched a Concerted Attack on Yan
【原文】
齐、韩、魏共攻燕，燕使太子请救于楚。楚王使景阳将而救之。暮舍，使左右司马各营壁地。已，植表。景阳怒，曰女所营者，水皆至, 灭表。此焉可以舍！”乃令徙。明日，大雨，山水大出，所营者水皆灭表， 军吏乃服。
【今译】
齐国、韩国和魏国一起进攻燕国，燕国派大子到楚国请求援助，楚 王派景阳率领军队进行营救。晚上宿营的时候，景阳让左右司马布置 好各自的营地。已经树立起了标志。景阳发怒了，说：“你们所选择的 营地，水都能漫过来，把标志毁坏掉。这些地方怎么能够宿营呢？”于是 命令他们迁移了。第二天，下起了大雨，山洪大量流下来，在他们原本 选择宿营的地方，水都把树立的标志毁掉了，官兵才表示佩服。
Allied forces consisting of the troops of the states of Qi’ Han and Wei launched a concerted attack on the state of Yan. Yan sent the crown prince to the state of Chu to ask for reinforcements，and the king of Chu appointed Jing Yang to be Commander-in-Chief to command the troops to rescue Yan. In the evening，Jing Yang ordered the Left Sima (the title of a kind of high-ranking military officer in ancient China) and the Right Sima to prepare their respective encampments，and they each erected a mast to mark the places where they set up their tents. Jing Yang became angry and said，“The places you have chosen can be overrun by mountain torrents，and your masts will be damaged. Why have you set up your tents to spend the night here?” He then ordered them to move to another place. The next day，there were huge mountain torrents，and both the masts they had set up before were submerged. So the officers and men admired Jing Yang very much.

于是遂不救燕，而攻魏難丘，取之以与宋。三国惧，乃罢兵。魏军其西，齐军其东，楚军欲还，不可得也。景阳乃开西和门,昼以车骑，暮 以烛见，通使于魏。齐师怪之，以为燕、楚与魏谋之，乃引兵而去。齐兵 已去，魏失其与国，无与共击楚，乃夜遁。楚师乃还。
【今译】
于是他们不去营救燕国，而是进攻魏国的維丘，占领了它，把它送给宋国。齐、韩、魏三国恐惧了，于是撤了兵。魏国军队驻扎在西边，齐 国军队驻扎在东边，楚国军队想回国，却不能够。景阳就打开西和门， 白天让车辆来来往往，晚上灯火通明，显示出跟魏国互通使节的样子。 齐国军队对此感到奇怪，认为燕国、楚国跟魏国要图谋自己，于是撤兵 离去。齐军撤走以后，魏国失掉了自己的盟国，不能跟它一起进攻楚 军，于是连夜撤离,楚国军队这才回国，
Then instead of rescuing the state of Yan, Jing Yang ordered his officers and men to attack the area of Yongqiu of the state of Wei, occupied it and presented this area to the state of Song (there must be a mistake in this sentence because the state of Song has already been ruined at that time). The three states—Qi, Han and Wei were afraid, and as a result，they ceased military action. The troops of the state of Wei were stationed west of Jing Yang’s army, and those of Qi were stationed east of them. The troops of Chu wanted to return to their state，but that was not impossible. Jing Yang then ordered the western gate of his camp to be opened to let chariots in and out during the day and lit it up at night to make others believe that he and the troops of Wei were exchanging messengers with each other. The troops of Qi were baffled and thought that the troops of Yan, Chu and Wei were scheming against them. So they retreated. After the troops of Qi left, those of Wei lost their ally and therefore could no longer launch attacks against the troops of Chu. As a result，they also retreated during the night. Then the troops of Chu returned to their state.
