Gongshu Ban Invented Some Apparatus for Chu to Attack Song
【原文】
公输般为楚设机，将以攻宋。墨子闻之，百舍重茧，往见公输般，谓 之曰吾自宋闻子。吾欲借子杀（王）[人]。”公输般曰：“吾义固不杀 (王）[人]!”墨子曰闻公为云梯，将以攻宋。宋何罪之有？义不杀 (王）[人]而攻国，是不杀少而杀众！敢问攻宋何义也？”公输般服焉，请 见之王。
【今译】
公输般为楚国设计了器械，准备用来攻打宋国。墨子听说了这件事，走一百里路才歇息一会儿，脚上磨起层层老茧，赶来见公输般，对他 说我在宋国听说过您。我想借助您来杀人。”公输般说广我很讲道 义，本来就不会杀人的。”墨子说听说您制作了云梯，将用来攻打宋 国。宋国有什么罪？很讲道义，不杀人，却进攻别人的国家，这是不杀 少数人而杀很多人。斗胆问一句，攻打宋国有什么道义可言呢？”公输 般服输了，请求把他引见给楚王。
Gongshu Ban invented some apparatus for the state of Chu, which it would use to attack the state of Song, When Mozi heard of that, he headed for Chu immediately. He wouldn’t take a rest untill he had walked one hundred li and his feet were covered with layers of calluses. He met Gongshu Ban and told him，“I have heard of you when I was in Song, I want to make use of you to get rid of my personal enemy, Gongshu Ban said，“It is against my value to murder anyone.” Mozi said，“Well，I have heard that you have invented Yun Ti (referring to an extremely lofty ladder) and will use it to attack Song. What kind of sins has Song committed? You will stick to your value and therefore won’t kill anyone. But you are planning to attack another state. This is simply refusing to kill a few people but planning to kill many. Please tell me according to what kind of value do you want to attack Song?” Gongshu Ban was convinced. So he introduced Mozi to the king of Chu,

墨子见楚王，曰今有人于此，舍其文轩，邻有弊舆而欲窃之；舍其 锦绣，邻有短褐而欲窃之；舍其粱肉，邻有糟糠而欲窃之。此为何若人 也？”王曰必为有窃疾矣.墨子曰：“荆之地方五千里，宋方五百里，此 犹文轩之与弊舆也；荆有云梦，犀兕麋鹿盈之，江、汉鱼鳖鼋鼉为天下饶,宋所谓无雉兔鲋鱼者也，此犹粱肉之与糟糠也;荆有长松、文梓、槻、 栴、豫樟，宋无长木,此犹锦绣之与短褐也。恶以王吏之攻宋，为与此同 类也！”
【今译】
墨子拜见楚王，说；“假设有这么一个人，舍弃自己装饰精致的车 子，邻居有一辆破旧的车子却想盗窃它；舍弃自己华丽高档的衣服，邻 居有短小的粗布衣却想盗窃它；舍弃自己的精美食物，邻居有糟糠却想 盗窃它。这是一个怎样的人呢？”楚王说一定是有盗窃痺吧。”墨子说楚国的土地方闽五千里，宋国方圓五百里，这如同装饰精 致的车子和破旧的车子之间的比较一般；楚国有云梦泽，充满了犀牛、麋鹿，长江和汉水的鱼、鳖、鼋、鳄等，是天下最多的，宋国是所谓的没有 野鸡、兔子和鲤鱼的地方，这如同精美食物跟糟糠之间的比较一般；楚 国有高大的松树、梓树、椴树、楠树、豫樟树等，宋国连大树也没有，这如 同华丽高档的服装跟短小的粗布衣服之间的比较一般，我认为大王的 官兵进攻宋国跟这是一样的。”
Mozi visited the king of Chu and said, “Suppose there was a person here, who would discard his well decorated carriage and filch his neighbourJ s worn carriage, would discard his fine suit and pilfer his neighbour’s short coat made of coarse fabric，would discard his delicious meal and steal his neighbour's bad food. What would you think of such a person?” The king said, “He must be a kleptomaniac. "Mozi continued, “The territory of your state is five thousand square li and that of Song is only five hundred. This is somewhat the same as the contrast between a well decorated carriage and a worn one. The state of Chu has the Yunmeng Lake. It teems with rhinoceros, elk and deer. The Yangzi River and the Hanshui River together produce the largest amount of fish and turtles in the world. However, Song doesn9 t have pheasants，hares or crucian. This is somewhat the same as the contrast between a delicious meal and bad food. Chu has huge trees such as pines, catapla， Pian, Nan and Yu Zhang etc,，but Song doesn’t have any big trees. This is somewhat the same as the contrast between a fine suit and a short coat made of coarse fabric. I think that sending officers and men to attack Song is the same."

The king said, “I see! I will give up the aggression against Song. ”
