Xi Shou Attacked Huang

Xi Shou, also known as Gongsun Yan, led troops to attack Huang. When they marched through the territory of the state of Wei, Xi Shou sent an emissary to take the following message to Wei’s sovereign; “Our troops are marching through the suburbs of your capital. However, you haven’t sent out anybody here to show us your good will. Have we done anything wrong? Now Huang will soon be occupied. After that, we will turn our troops to approach your capital. ” Wei’s sovereign was very terrified, so he prepared three hundred bundles of silk and three hundred yi of gold, and was going to send some people to follow Xi Shou’s emissary and present these gifts to Xi Shou, But Nan Wenzi stopped him and said,“If Xi Shou defeats Huang, he won’t dare attack us. If he is defeated, he won’t dare attack us either. Occupying Huang is a great contribution and will bring a high reputation. Therefore,Xi Shou will be arrogant towards his peers. The high-ranking court officials remaining in his state abhor his arrogance, so they will speak ill of him. Despite enjoying a high reputation and making a great contribution, Xi Shou will definitely not sit idly by and let others denigrate him although he is stupid- If he loses the war in Huang, he will flee in fear. And he won’t be absolved. He won't dare attack us to double his mistake of being defeated. ”
