梁王伐邯郸
Wei’s King Launched an Attack on Handan
【原文】
梁王伐邯郸，而征师于宋。宋君使使者请于赵王曰夫梁兵劲而 权重，今征师于弊邑，弊邑不从，则恐危社稷；若扶梁伐赵，以害赵国，则 寡人不忍也。愿王之有以命弊邑！”赵王曰然。夫宋之不足如梁也， 寡人知之矣。弱赵以强梁，宋必不利也。则吾何以告子而可乎？”使者曰臣请受边城，徐其攻而留其日，以待下吏之有城而已。”赵王曰： “善.”
【今译】
魏王进攻邯郸，并且向宋国寻求兵力支援宋国国君派使者向赵 王请承道魏国兵力强大而且地位重要，如今向我们国家索求兵力援 助，我们国家要是不答应，恐怕国家会陷入危险；如果帮助魏国进攻赵 国，给赵国带来损害，我不忍心。希望大王能给我们国家下达一道命 令！”赵王说：“行。宋国的实力不足以对抗魏国，我是知道的。削弱赵 国来增强魏国，必定对宋国不利。那我让您怎么做才可以呢？”使者说：“我请求您给出一个边境城邑，我们慢慢攻打它来拖延时间，来等待您 的官吏前来守城而已。”赵王说好。”
The king of the state of Wei launched an attack on the capital of Handan of the state of Zhao, and asked the state of Song for reinforcements. The king of Song ordered an emissary to send the following message to the king of Zhao： “The military force of the state of Wei is formidable and the state of Wei is powerful. It has asked us for reinforcements. If we refuse, we are afraid that our own state might be in disaster. If we help it attack you, we will cause damage to your state. We don’t want to do that. Please tell us what we should do,” The king of Zhao said, “That’s right. I know that your state is not able to confront the state of Wei. Weakening our state to strengthen the state of Wei is certainly not good for your state. So what kind of suggestion do you want me to offer you?” The emissary said, “Well，you can just recommend a border town，so that we can attack it listlessly to kill time and wait for your sending officers and men to defend it. ” The king of Zhao said, “Very good. ”

宋人因遂举兵人赵境，而围一城焉。梁王甚说，曰宋人助我攻 矣！”赵王亦说，曰宋人止于此矣！”故兵退难解，德施于梁，而无怨于 赵。故名有所加，而实有所归。
【今译】
于是宋国就派兵进入赵国边境，并且包围了一座城邑。魏王非常高 兴，说宋国人帮助我发动进攻了 ！”赵王也很高兴，说宋国人也就做做 这表面文章罢了。”因此在魏国退兵、赵国解除战祸以后，宋国既让魏国感 激自己，而且又没有得罪赵国。所以既赢得了名声，又获得了实惠。
Then the troops of Song corssed the border of the state of Zhao and besieged a town. The king of Wei was very happy and said，“Look, the troops of Song are helping me attack Zhao!” The king of Zhao was happy too- He said，“The troops of Song are only doing this by pretence. ” Hence，after the troops of Wei retreated and the threat of war was removed from the city of Handan，the state of Wei was grateful to Song，and at the same time, the state of Zhao did not blame it. So，not only did Song gain a better reputation?but it also benefited in practical terms*
