智伯欲伐卫
Marquis Zhi Wanted to Attack Wei
【廉文】
智伯欲伐卫，遗卫君野马四百，白璧一。卫君大悦，群臣皆贺，南文 子有忧色。卫君曰广大国大欢，而子有优色何？”文子曰无功之赏，无力之礼，不可不察也！野马四，白璧一，此小国之礼也，而大国致之。君 其图之！”卫君以其言告边境。智伯果起兵而袭卫，至境而反，曰卫有 贤人，先知吾谋也。”
【今译】
智铂想攻打丑菌，送给上国君主四匹好马、一块白玉,卫国君主非 常高兴，群都祝贺他。南文子狯上却有忧愁的神色。卫国倉主说: “举国上下一片欢臁，你脸上为什么有忧愁的神色呢？ ”南文子说广没有功劳却受到奖赏，不费力却得到厚礼，不能不明察啊。四匹好马、一块 白玉，这是小国向大国进献的礼物，而一个大国却给我们送来了。您该 谋划一下卫国君主把他的话转达给守卫边境的官兵。智伯果然起兵 袭击卫国，到了卫国的边境却撤兵了，说：“卫国有贤人，事先知道了我 的计谋。”
Marquis Zhi was going to attack the state of Wei, so he presented the sovereign of Wei with four excellent horses and a white jade. The sovereign of Wei was very happy and all the high-ranking court officials congratulated him. However, Nan Wenzi looked very melancholy. The sovereign asked him，“Now people all over the state are celebrating it. Why are you looking sad?” Wenzi said，“If one is rewarded without having made any contribution or presented very generous gifts without having exerted any effort to do something useful, he should ponder it. Four excellent horses and white jade are gifts presented by small states to the big ones. However,we have received these things from a big state. Please think about that carefully, ” The sovereign then repeated Nan Wenzi’s words to the officers and men guarding the border. Marquis Zhi dispatched his troops to attack Wei as expected. But he ordered his troops to retreat when they reached Wei’s border. He said，“There must be a wise and capable person in the state of Wei who has foreseen my plan, ”
