秦攻卫之蒲
The Troops of Qin Attacked Pu of Wei II
【原文】
秦攻卫之蒲。胡衍谓樗里疾曰公之伐蒲，以为秦乎？以为魏乎？为魏则善，为秦则不赖矣。k卫所以为卫者，以有蒲也。今蒲人于魏，卫 必折于魏。魏亡西河之外而弗能复取者，弱也。今并卫于魏，魏必强。 魏强之日，西河之外必危。且秦王亦将观公之事，害秦以善魏，秦王必 怨公。”樗里疾曰奈何？”胡衍曰公释蒲勿攻，臣请为公人戒蒲守，以 德卫君樗里疾曰广善。”
【今译】
秦国进攻卫国的蒲。胡衍对樗里疾说您攻打蒲，是为秦国呢，还是为魏国？为魏国就挺好的，为秦国的话就不好了。卫国之所以能够 保全下来，是因为拥有蒲的缘故。如果蒲被秦国占领了，卫国一定会投 靠魏国,魏国失去了西河以外的土地而不能收复，是因为实力弱的缘 故。要是魏国兼并了卫国，魏国的实力一定会强大起来。魏国强大的 时候，西河以外的地区就一定会有危险了。再说秦王也将观察您所做 的事，损害秦国来为魏国谋利，秦王一定会怨恨您的。”轉里疾说该怎 么办呢？”胡衍说您放过蒲，不要进攻它，请让我为您去告诫蒲地的长 官，来对卫国国君施加恩惠。”樗里疾说好的.
The troops of the state of Qin attacked the region of Pu of the state of Wei II . For this reason，Hu Yan had a talk with Chu Liji, and said, :”Are you assaulting the region of Pu for the sake of the state of Qin, or for the state of Wei I ? This is advantageous to the state of Wei I， but disadvantageous to the state of Qin. The reason that the state of Wei II has survived lies in the fact that it has maintained the region of Pu. If the state of Qin takes over Pu, the state of Wei II will resort to the state of Wei I . The state of Wei I has lost the area around Xihe to us and could not reoccupy it because it is weak. Now if it builds an alliance with Wei H，it will be strengthened. As a result, we might not be able to keep the area around Xihe. Moreover, the king of Qin will keep an eye on what you have done for the state. If he finds out that you are benefiting the state of Wei I by causing damage to the state of Qin, he will become hostile towards you, ” Chu Liji asked，“What shall I do then?” Hu Yan said, “Just give up assaulting Pu, And I will go to warn the Commander-in-Chief of Pu about it on your behalf, as well as make the sovereign of Wei H be grateful to you, ” Chu Liji said, “Very good."

胡衍因人蒲，谓其守曰：“樗里子知蒲之病也，其言曰：‘吾必取蒲。’ 今臣能使释蒲勿攻。”蒲守再拜，因效金三百镒焉，曰；“秦兵诚去，请厚 子于卫君。”
【今译】
于是胡衍就到了蒲，对蒲地的太守说樗里疾知道蒲的虚弱了，他 说：‘我一定要占领蒲.’现在我能够让他放弃攻打蒲。”蒲地太守拜了两 拜，接着献上三百镒黄金，说如果真能让秦军振离，我会让卫国君主 委任您要职。”
Hu Yan then went to Pu and told the Commander-in-Chief of Pu, “Chu Liji knows that you might not be able to defend Pu，so he said that he would definitely occupy Pu, But I can make him give up attacking Pu. ” The Commander-in-Chief of Pu bowed twice，presented three hundred yi of gold to him and said，“If you can make the troops of Qin retreat，I will ask our sovereign to appoint you to a powerful position. ’’

胡衍取金于蒲，以自重于卫。樗里子亦得三百金而归，又以德卫君 也。
【今译】
胡衍从蒲地取得了黄金，并且因此获得了卫国的重要取位。摴里疾也得到了三百镒黄金回国,了，而且还让卫国君主对他感恩戴德.
Hu Yan obtained the gold from Pu and also gained a powerful position from the state of Wei II - Chu Liji obtained three hundred yi of gold as well. Then he returned to Qin, By so doing, he also did a significant favour to the sovereign of Weill.
