卫嗣君时胥靡逃之魏
During Lord Weisi's Time,Xu Mi Fled to Wei
【原文】
卫嗣君时，胥靡逃之魏，卫赎之百金，不与。乃请以左氏。群臣谏 曰以百金之地赎一胥靡，无乃不可乎？”君曰广治无小，乱无大。教化 喻于民，三百之城，足以为治；民无廉耻，虽有十左氏，将何以用之？”
【今译】
卫嗣君在位的时候，胥靡逃亡到魏国去了，卫国想用一百镒黄金 把他赎回来，魏国不给它,于是请求用左氏邑交换胥靡。大臣们都进 谏说用一百镒黄金和左氏邑来赎区区一个胥靡，恐怕不可以这么做 吧？”卫嗣君说一个国家治理得好，不在乎它小；一个国家很混乱，大 也没有用.如果教化能被百姓接受，一个仅有三里大的城邑就足以实 现大治；如果人民没有廉耻，即使有十个左氏邑那么大的地方，又将有 什么用呢？”
When Lord Weivsi was in power, Xu Mi fled to the state of Wei, The lord presented one hundred yi of gold to Wei and asked it to send him back. However, Wei refused to return him. Then the lord offered the county of Zuoshi to Wei. All the high-ranking court officials remonstrated with him and said, “As for offering one hundred yi of gold along with the county of Zuoshi to atone for a person like Xu Mi，we are afraid that we shouldn’t do that. ” The lord said, “If a state is in good order, it doesn’t matter even though it might be very small. If a state is in chaos, it will be of no use that it might be extremely big. If my moral education is well known among the people，and I had a state of only three square li，I qould put it in order. If the people had no sense of shame， even if I had a state ten times bigger than Zuoshi, would it be of any use to me?”
