从1月10日起，北京市检察系统正式实行人民监督员制度，119名监督员上岗，他们可以监督检察官应当立案而不立案等7种可疑作为。

北京市检察院副检察长马剑光说：“将人民监督员制度引入到检察体系中是推进司法民主改革中的重要一步。”
在上面的报道中，people supervisor就是“人民监督员”，人民监督员来自普通平民，所以也可用grassroots supervisor来表示。supervisor除了表示“监督人”之外，还可以表示“指导者，主管人”，例如：accounting supervisor(会计主管)。考场的考官也是用supervisor来表示。
设立人民监督员可以promote judicial fairness(促进司法公正)，主要监督duty crimes(职务犯罪)。人民监督员没有薪酬，但是可以得到compensation for out-of-pocket expenses(经费补助)。
