油价上涨造成美国各大加油站偷油案件增多，同时促使更多加油站采用先付款后加油的方式来阻止这一现象。

被疯涨的油价激怒的美国机动车驾驶者们正在越来越多地选择偷的方式。当油价上涨的时候，偷油（加完油就走）的人也在增多。…… 很多加油站已经开始要求先付费后加油了。
该报道中，drive-off 指a motorist pulls up at a gas station's pump, fills the car's tank, and then speeds off without paying for the fuel.（驾驶者加油以后不付钱就疾驰而去的行为），在这个语境中可以理解为“偷油”（gasoline theft）。payment up front就是“预先付费”的意思，有时候也用prepayment来表示同样的意思。“预付的费用”则是prepaid charges/fee。
