hannibal changes his career
as soon as the circus came to town, maria wanted to see it. maris’s grandpa went straight down to the ticket office with a big wad of cash to see the man in charge of the show. they were so impressed that they invited him and maria to their grand opening ceremony, which was being held in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the circus.
the ringmaster, a large character in a top hat, made a little speech. “ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “welcome to the circus, where wonders never cease. tonight’s performance is being given for charity, and it is a great chance for us all to channel some goodwill towards people less fortunate than ourselves.
and how, sit back and enjoy our performance, in which we attempt to cater for everyone, big or small.”
however, during the middle of the performance, a rather naughty chimpanzee rushed into the audience, stole a large bag of bananas in a rather casual way, and ran out of the big top.
the result, as you may imagine, was chaos. the whole cast were nonplussed and the performance ground to a halt. maria realized that the cardinal sin in this situation was to panic, but nobody else seemed to care. the ringmaster strode into the ring.
“ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “please remain seated. hannibal is a harmless animal and i can certify that he has never bitten anyone during the course of his career. in any case, you can be sure that we will capture him forthwith.” actually, the only real casualty so far was the little girl who had lost her bananas and was handed over into the care of the clowns, who were taking it in turns to caress her and squirt water at her from the flowers on their lapels. however, the audience leaped up en masse and fled from the big top into the night.
nothing daunted, maria rose to the challenge. as the other customers fled, maria calmly noted that the monkey weighed down by having to carry a large bag of bananas, had not in fact gone far, but was perched in the shadows on a low cement wall with the bag how jammed firmly over his head. maria quietly went and fetched the ringmaster to catch him. the ringmaster looked extremely annoyed as he strode over to where hannibal was sitting.
“hannibal,” he said.
“eeeeeeck,” said hannibal.
“you have stolen your last banana. tomorrow you’re going to the zoo!”
