I arrived at school with my luggage intact and prepared to integrate into this new culture. I consider myself an intellectual so I took on an intense first semester. My integrity was tested right from the start when I foolishly had intercourse with a professor. A mistake I don’t intend on making twice. Too bad my roommate didn’t intervene and stop it from happening.
The dorm room was nice enough with a spacious interior. Unfortunately, they didn’t insulate it and I was told it gets quite cold in the winter. Not something I looked forward to. The first few days were basically intermittent rain showers that persisted to bring me down. I wasn’t used to this weather back home, but living and studying abroad is what I chose, so I put up with the weather and went on with my life away from home.
I started running low on money so I took a part-time job on campus. I worked for internal security in the engineering department. The campus had regular security, but engineering wanted its own security force. The interviewer for the job said I showed a natural instinct for tact and diplomacy, which he said were important for the job. I had worked some security jobs back in my home country so the training really came in handy. There was only a short interval between when my last class finished and my job started so I found myself running around a lot that first semester. I didn’t mind it so much because I was used to rushing from one place to another back home, working as a delivery boy when I was young. I would often go for walks on a path that intersects the park to relax after work. I really enjoyed my life abroad.
