英语中的动词根据其能否带宾语，可以分为及物动词与不及物动词。只有及物动词后才可以直接加宾语。不及物动词只有与一些介词构成短语后才能加宾语。本句中，knock就是个不及物动词，因此不能使用knock the door。这一类的动词有很多。比如operate，这个词既可以做及物动词，表示“操作、又可以做不及物动词，表示“做手术”，在做不及物动词的时候后面要接介词on才能加宾语表示“为某人做手术”的含义。我们不能说they need to operate her atomach.(他们得给她做胃部手术。)应该说:they need to operate on her stomach.
