名人教英文：用英语表达"勋衔"名称
礼宾府均会举行授勋典礼honours and awards ceremony，共300多人分别获颁大紫荆勋章，金、银、铜紫荆星章，或获其他嘉奖。
大紫荆勋章英文叫the grand bauhinia medal，缩写gbm；金、银和铜紫荆星章分别是gold bauhinia star（gbs）、silver bauhinia star（sbs）和brass bauhinia star（bbs）。
这套授勋及嘉奖制度叫honours and awards system，是仿效英国的。英国政府对以不同方式为大英帝国效力的人（包括香港人）颁授勋章，称为（等级从高至低）gbe、kbe、cbe、obe和mbe，其中be代表british empire，各勋衔的第一个字母依次代表grand（grand cross，大十字）、knight（knight commander，爵级司令）、commander（司令）、officer（官佐）和member（员佐）。这些勋章统称为order of the british empire，这里的order即勋章。现在的金、银、铜紫荆星章，就叫做order of the bauhinia star；大紫荆勋章属另一较高级别，叫order of the grand bauhinia。
获授勋的人，可在自己的名字后面加上代表勋衔的字母，如chan tai man, bbs，就像sir y.k. kan, gbe那样，这是英国的一贯叫法。不过，如果要在中文姓名后加上中文的勋衔，便有点别扭。这除了因为中文勋衔没有方便的简称，还因为cbe、obe、mbe等英国勋衔是受勋者的名称（officer、commander、member等），但特区政府颁授的gbm、gbs、sbs或bbs等，代表的却是勋章的名称而不是受勋者。所以若陈大文先生获颁mbe，成为chan tai man, mbe，人们可以说mr chan is an mbe。但若陈大文成为chan tai man, bbs，则不能说mr chan is a bbs；介绍他的时候，也不好说「陈大文，铜紫荆星章」。
大紫荆勋章的受勋者，现在习惯了叫「勋贤」，这是个古词，指有功勋有才能的人，如「高锟教授，大紫荆勋贤」。至于获紫荆星章者应否称为「金（银或铜）紫荆勋贤」，则有待商榷。
