奥巴马一开始就表明自己并不天真，完全清楚目前的艰难处境。with clear eyes指洞察现状，近义语是with eyes wide open。

此句用了平行句式「proud of... mindful of...」，对比已做和未做之事（antithesis）。

以上有些句子以but和and开头。传统文法上，这两个连接词不能用于句首，但在口语却相当常见。
