名人教英文：英十四行诗 历久常新（2）
上周谈到sir thomas wyatt的十四行诗my galley，以在风雨中迷途的桨帆船，比喻人被爱情愚弄，迷失方向，感到绝望。用航海比喻爱情，于十四行诗相当常见，my galley的优秀之处，在于其别出心裁的比喻。
诗歌一开首说：
my galley charged with forgetfulness
thorough (= through) sharp seas
in winter nights doth (=does) pass
'tween rock and rock;
and eke (= also) mine enemy, alas,
that is my lord,
steereth (= steers) with cruelness;
为什么说桨帆船盛载着（be charged with）「善忘」（forgetfulness）呢？由此可见，这首诗的主旨并非描述航海经历，只是以船为喻。冬夜的惊涛骇浪（sharp seas in winter nights），寓意爱情的波折。实质意思是：人在爱神（mine enemy, my lord）的操控下，变得恍恍惚惚。
桨帆船被风雨摧残——an endless wind doth tear the sail apace... a rain of tears, a cloud of dark disdain, hath done the wearied cords great hinderance (= hindrance)，好比作者被爱情折磨。当中cords是双关语，既指船的缆绳，又和拉丁文的「心」（cor, cordis）写法近似；明写船的缆绳受尽雨打，其实暗示作者的心被爱情折磨至疲惫不堪。
这两句有两个历久常新的比喻，至今仍然适用。a rain of tears和中文成语「泪如雨下」有异曲同工之妙，可见天下人的想象何其相似！a cloud of dark disdain比喻遭鄙弃。美国民主党于刚过去的中期选举被选民离弃，丧失多个席位，我们可以说：a cloud of dark disdain hangs over obama。很多时候，报章会用a cloud hangs over someone/something来表示报道对象处于某些不利情况的阴霾下。
诗歌末段提到the stars be hid that led me to this pain，古人用星星作导航指标，看不见星星就难以辨认方向；这里的星星又比喻爱人的眼睛。因此，这句一方面指船因没有星星导航而迷途，另一方面比喻作者因看不见爱人而怅惘。最终作者得出无望回航、只有沉沦的结论（drowned is reason that should me consort, and i remain despairing of the port.），调子忧郁，抽动人心！
