名人教英文：漫谈押韵（rhyme）
英文有多种语音修辞法，除了曾在本栏介绍过的头韵（alliteration）外，还有押韵（rhyme）。押韵字词最常见于诗歌，童谣humpty dumpty（一个蛋形人物）便是其中一例：
humpty dumpty sat on a wall.
humpty dumpty had a great fall.
all the king's horses and all the king's men
couldn't put humpty together again.
这首童谣有两对韵脚——第一、二句的wall和 fall，以及第三、四句的men和again。连主角的名字humpty dumpty也是一对押韵字，所以唱来读来，琅琅上口。
1960年代有一首英文流行曲叫itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini，讲述一个穿上黄色圆点比坚尼泳衣的少女因为泳衣太小而害羞得不敢走出更衣室。itsy bitsy 和teenie weenie两对押韵字正用来形容泳衣细小。
不单是诗歌，日常生活中也有许多押韵的英文用语。例如说：to impress his customers, this clothing supplier wined and dined them all night. wine and dine即以美酒佳肴款待。谈到美食，火锅的英译hot pot亦押韵。另一例子是大杂烩hodgepodge，这个词语引伸形容多种不相类的东西拼凑在一起：the film is a hodgepodge of various themes.
同韵字可加强文句的感染力。使用同韵的近义词，能够起强调的作用。slice and dice的字面义是切片和切粒，引伸指把数据仔细分拆，再以不同的角度研究。the new software can help us slice and dice the sales data.
又例如：after the financial crisis, investment bankers can no longer afford to spend holidays in glitzy, ritzy las vegas. glitzy解作耀眼眩目；伦敦和巴黎的the ritz是豪华酒店的佼佼者，而该酒店的名字亦成为豪华的代名词。glitzy and ritzy意即极尽奢华。
反义的押韵词并用，则有助突出对比。譬如说，遇到压力，有些人会选择逃避，有些人会选择战斗—— people choose between flight and fight in response to acute stress. 常用的同韵字词还有很多，有机会再谈。
