名人教英文：非常经济学
2005年，芝加哥大学经济学家steven d levitt和记者stephen j dubner合着freakonomics。该书出版后，旋即成为畅销书，于是作者在2009年再推出superfreakonomics。
书的名字和内容一样有趣。freakonomics一字由作者自创，其实是freak和economics的合体。freak作为形容词，有「反常」、「奇特」等意思。freakonomics讲的不是高深理论，作者从经济学角度探究社会现象的真相，见解独特，跳出传统思维框框。
作者思想活泼，文笔也生动。书一开首谈到，上世纪90年代初，美国治安急剧恶化，人人自危：
anyone living in the united states in the early 1990s and paying even a whisper of attention to the nightly news or a daily paper could be forgiven for having been scared out of his skin.
the culprit was crime. it had been rising relentlessly - a graph plotting the crime rate in any american city over recent decades looked like a ski slope in profile - and it seemed now to herald the end of the world as we knew it.
whisper原指「低声细语」，作者用来修饰attention一词，以表示「些微的关注」。
scared out of his skin，中文即「吓破胆」，近似的英文说法还有scare the daylights out of someone。
could be forgiven直译为「可以原谅」，但在这里的意思其实是「可以理解」。
把人吓坏的「元凶」（culprit）就是「罪案」。作者把罪案率上升之状，比喻为像滑雪坡（ski slope）般陡峭；又极言情况之坏，令当时的人觉得末日将至。herald有「预示（某事物）来临」的意思。
不过，美国罪案率自90年代中却突然下降。很多人认为应该归功于警力增强或教育提升，但levitt则认为关键在于1973年联邦最高法院对roe v. wade一案的判决：研究显示，在问题家庭成长的人较易误入歧途，贫困、未婚、未成年女子所生的孩子，长大后较有可能成为罪犯；roe v. wade案的裁决令堕胎合法化，不少没有能力照顾孩子的未婚妈妈选择堕胎，结果大大减少可能成为罪犯的人。这个推断就是think out of the box的例子。
