名人教英文：毋忘六四——remembering tian'anmen
近年悼念六四的常用口号，是「不想回忆，未敢忘记」，直译 "don't want to remember, dare not forget"。作为标语，为求简洁，我会译做﹕
"wouldn't remember? daren't forget!"
当然，原文没有问号感叹号，这个译法，确也不够忠于原著。看，这番「不想回忆」，都因为太伤痛（too traumatic）、太难过（too sorrowful），很有一点哀怨之意，讲 "don't want to remember"，感觉硬了点，加一些婉约味道，是 "wouldn't want to remember"。
而「未敢忘记」的理由，包括基于人性（humanity）、良知（conscience）及羞愧（shame）。也即是说，仍然不忠于原著，整句可以一试意译﹕
too sorrowful to remember. too shameful to forget.
今日，是「六四」二十三周年。
today is the 23rd anniversary of the tian'anmen killings.
明日的国际新闻报道，该就会有这么一句﹕"tens of thousands packed a candlelight vigil in hong kong monday night to commemorate the bloody crackdown on tian'anmen square in beijing in 1989." 数以万计的人，周一晚迫爆香港一个烛光集会，悼念八九年北京天安门广场上的血腥镇压。
留心一读上面两句英文，就会留意到西方媒介一般不把六四就叫 "june 4"，因为外头人未必会明白。实实在在，六四这个数字，是本地「饮香港奶水大的人」的民主图腾﹕
"june 4" is true blue hongkongers' democracy totem. true blue，解忠诚、百分百、不折不扣。
「毋忘六四」，remembering tian'anmen。
上周一个平反六四游行，有许多内地人参加，其中一个给西报引述说﹕"i value the chance because in china we are gagged."「我珍惜这个机会，因为在中国我们都给捂上嘴巴（言论自由受压）。」
这句话的语病，出在in china，因为现实中，香港已是中国一部分，要改写in mainland china（在中国大陆）。
and hong kong is the only place in china where victims of the crackdown are openly mourned.「而香港是唯一可以公开悼念六四死难者的一片中国土地。」
这句话，也许一样会有人质疑﹕那台湾算不算呢？
