名人教英文：哗，拉丁文？不怕！
有同学说，英文已经够难，还要学英文中的拉丁生字，哗，好惊呀。但真的不必怕，到头来不过是vocab，只是这些「奇」字源自拉丁文罢了，且因为串法非一般，反而容易记。
1. status quo 话说香港50年不变，维持现状。现状就是status quo，名词。不一定「大单」的情况才用，家事私事都得。
having a new baby is likely to change the domestic status quo. 添了个新生儿，家庭现况该有所变。
2. pro bono 许多人做义工（volunteer），做的就是免费、义务、无偿、for public good的工作，但 pro bono一般多用于专业但不收钱的服务。
that lawyer took the student's case as pro bono work.
那个律师免费为这学生打官司。
3. ad hoc 字面意思是"to this"，指不预先计划、有需要时（「杀到嚟」）才做。两字可撮起，adhoc。
complaints? we'll deal with them on an ad hoc basis.
投诉？有就逐宗处理。
let's meet up adhoc.
我们（随时）有需要时会面。
4. bona fide 真的（genuine）、无欺骗成分的（in good faith）。
he proves to be a bona fide representative of the school. 他真确是那间学校的代表。
以上用语都已是日常英文一部分，颇为普遍；但下面4个稍为罕见，为免「扮嘢」、「懒高深」的嫌疑，不要随口用，但最好学会︰
5. quid pro quo 解this for that，像中文的「礼尚往来」，亦有an equal exchange、公平交换的意思。
i will return your favours quid pro quo.
我会礼尚往来地还你的人情。
6. prima facie（读fei-shee，也有读fah-shee）解at first sight, clear and evident，基本上只是个法律用语，指一宗案情「表面证供成立」︰that is a prima facie case.
7. caveat（读ka-vee-at） 警告，warning。原文是caveat emptor = let the buyer beware.「买家小心」。
before you leap at that property deal, caveat emptor.
你忙不迭同意那宗物业交易前，作为买家要小心﹗

但日常生活真系较少讲caveats，多说"thanks for the heads-up"。
8. veni, vidi, vici（读vichi）= "i came, i saw, i conquered"，「我来，我看，我征服」。这句话源自西泽大帝，带很重的历史戏剧味道，多用作夸张戏言︰
the champion（冠军人马）shouted, "veni, vidi, vici!"
