名人教英文：中英语的微妙差异
有些中英词汇看似同义，却有微妙的分别（nuance）。例如说：ambition 和 ambitious 往往被直译为「野心」和「野心勃勃的」，但是「野心勃勃」明显带贬义（negative connotation），而 ambitious 除了这个意思之外，还有比较正面的解释，譬如说「雄心壮志的」、「目标远大的」。例如：the government has set an ambitious target of reducing carbon emissions by at least 50% in 2020. 这里的 ambitious 形容目标订得很进取。
另一个须小心翻译的字是 politician。2005 年曾荫权参选特首，在职业一栏填上「politician / 政治家」，成为笑柄。曾荫权本来任职政务司长，可称为「senior official / 高级官员」或「public servant / 公职人员」（而非「civil servant / 公务员」，政务司长是政治委任官员，并不属于公务员体系）。他解释，用 politician 一字，是因为他参选时已辞去政务司长一职。即使如此，也不应该译成「政治家」。
politicians 可泛指「从政者」，但通常指 those who are engaged in party politics（投身政党政治的人）或 those who hold or seek elected office（参选或获选公职者）。此外，politicians 有时指目光短浅、只顾一己私利（特别是选举成绩）的「政客」，带贬义，俗语简称为 pols。填报职业时，用「从政者」较为适合。
「政治家」是用来称赞有远见、有成就的政治领导，最贴切的翻译为 statesman，不宜用以自称。美国十九世纪著名神学家兼作家 james freeman clarke 言简意赅地道出「政客」和「政治家」的分别："a politician thinks of the next election; a statesman, of the next generation." 李光耀雄图伟略，故被誉为新加坡的 senior statesman。从政者如果过分着重做「政治秀」，就不配做「政治家」，例如我们可以说：he has made too much of political grandstanding, falling short of standards befitting a statesman.
