乔﹕谢谢你走过来帮我清理一下。我一个人应付不了。
dana: what a mess! and just look at that tree branch sticking through the window. and all that broken glass!
达纳﹕真是一团糟！看，那树枝破窗而入，还有满地碎玻璃。
jo: yes, the wind blew the tree over and it crashed against the house smashing the window. and then it rained through the window for three hours. everything's absolutely soaked.
乔﹕是啊，狂风把树朝这边吹，撞到房子上，打破玻璃窗，其后三小时，雨水经破窗而入。什么都湿透了。
dana: are you covered for the damage?
达纳﹕你的损失，有赔偿吗？
jo: what do you mean?
乔﹕什么赔偿？
dana: have you got household insurance which will pay you the costs of putting everything right and replacing what's been broken?
达纳﹕你有没有买家居保险？保险可以支付你收拾一切的费用，以及更换破毁的东西。
jo: thank goodness yes. if i had to pay for everything myself, i would be in real trouble.
乔﹕谢天谢地，我有家居保险。假如一切费用，要我自己支付，可难以负担。
乔说﹕thanks for coming round to help clean up。come round是动词词组（phrasal verb），也作come around，指「造访（住在附近的人）」，和另一动词词组come over意思差不多，例如﹕you must come over / come round for dinner tomorrow（你明天一定要来吃晚饭）。
i couldn't do it on my own这一句，couldn't可不可改为can't？答案是﹕说目前不可能的事，英文用cannot或could not都可以，could not语气较为委婉，例如﹕i can't / couldn't think of a better way to handle the matter（这件事，我想不到好一点的处理办法）。
on one's own指「独力」或「单独」，一个同义说法是by oneself。要加强语气，两个说法之前都可以用all字，例如﹕(1) he lives all by himself / all on his own（他单独一人居住）。(2) she solved the mathematical problem all by herself / all on her own（她不用别人帮忙，自己解答了那数学问题）。
乔庆幸自己有家居保险﹕thank goodness。goodness本是good的名词，指「好」，例如﹕i like him for his goodness of heart（我喜欢他，因为他心地善良）。不过，thank goodness的goodness，其实是god的委婉说法。英语可用for god's sake、my god、thank god等等表达愤怒、惊愕、庆幸之类强烈情绪，但这样胡乱叫上帝，会被视为亵渎神明。所以，god往往改为较隐晦的goodness，变成for goodness' sake、my goodness、thank goodness等。
