名人教英文：going places... 去边 ?
he really wants to go places in life.
这句话看上去很浅，直译似乎是「他真希望生命中去许多地方」？错了。这句话的陷阱，是 to go places、going places 是个习语，解「成功」、「成就」。于是，正确的意思是﹕
「他真希望此生有所成就。」
有所成就，亦即要出人头地。这go places中的places，彷佛跟我们口语的「碇」有点相似——「佢知碇」、「佢无碇企」。而这款西式的「碇」，就指最高处、高峰。
the kid is so talented. （这孩子天分甚高。）she is going places.
= she is going to the top. 她会去至高位。
= she is going to be somebody. 她会出名。
= she is smart. 她好「醒」。
这赞美的话，除了用于个人，也可用在团体﹕
we all think the band is going places. 我们都认为这乐队将会出人头地、将会成名。
于是，用这个来玩字，日本「丰田」在美国推出一款新车时，就曾来一句备受好评的广告述语﹕
"let's go places!"
你也许没留意，going这个字，可以做名词，解situation，即情况。有句箴言﹕
when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
当情况变坏，坚强的人会坚持下去。
这句话之得意，是重复了 going 和 tough。第一个 going 系名词，第二个就是动作了。第一个 tough 指「艰困」，第二个 tough，the tough 是个众数名词，统称坚强的人——就像 the rich 是富人、the poor 是穷人。
这金句的励志信息，一言以蔽之，就是 "when the situation gets difficult or unpleasant"，你要勇敢面对﹕you face the difficulty.
